Description

Quoting Exercise We have discussed summarizing and written a summary of our first documentary, Blackfish, to use in Paper 1. Now, we need to move forward and work on another research skill, quoting. Part I. Using the “Quoting” handout under the “Skills” tab, answer the following questions. Please highlight or use red for your answers: 1. What is a TAG? A tag is the author’s name with a present-tense verb. 2. What is a parenthetical note? A parenthetical note or reference is adding the page number or title of which you got the quote at the end of the sentence. 3. How many different strategies are listed in the handout? Six 4. What film is quoted from on the last page (Hint: Look for the italics)? Miss Representation Part II. Look through your Blackfish notes. Consider some of the examples of logos, ethos, and pathos that you saw in the film, and try to think about which ones you will want to use in Paper 1. Below, list three properly cited quotations from the film that you would like to use in Paper 1. Make sure that you have a proper TAG, a parenthetical note, and proper quotation marks. (Your materials can look just like those from the last page of the “Quoting” handout, but just with Blackfish materials instead. Remember that I have linked the rush transcript of the film and a quick “cheat-sheet” of important names, dates, and other information for the film under the “Blackfish tab, too.

1. Cowperthwaite states there were “70+ maybe even more just killer whale trainer accidents, maybe 30 prior to me being hired at SeaWorld, and I knew about none of them” (Blackfish). 2. Burg states, “I never got the impression of him while I was there that oh my god he’s the scary whale” (Blackfish). 3. Burg adds, “he seemed to like work, he seemed interested, he seemed to want to learn

new things, he seemed to enjoy working with the trainers” (Blackfish)....
