Description

Before the short story of "Peter Klaus the Goatherd", the book gives a quick insight into the author, J.C.C. Nachtigal or "Otmar". The paragraph states that Washington Irving's translation of the short story is "an allegory about the conditions of life in the United States" during the time of the Industrial Revolution. Symbols of this period of change can be found throughout the text. Regarding the nine knights who were playing at nine pins, Peter remarks that the knight's "long beards and slashed doublets were not at all in the present fashion". One of the most prominent changes of times can be found as the fashion changes. One of my biggest role models is Coco Chanel. Her fashion lines and statements were always changing with the times. This quote reminded of the fashion trends and how they signify changing times. During the short story, Peter calls out for people he knows. He calls out for his wife and his daughters, but no one seems to respond. Eventually, Peter calls out for the blacksmith, Kurt Steffen, and the tailor, Valentine Meier. The people around him responded saying that Kurt Steffen, "has been at Sachsenburg, whence I suppose you are not come today". When Peter asks about the tailor, the crowd responds saying, "he has been lying more than fifteen years in a house he will never leave". This statement is a huge representation of the changes that have been made throughout the Industrial Revolution and even today. Many trades such as blacksmiths and tailors have been lost and under valued in today's world. Many machines have been made to make these jobs easier, faster, and cheaper. However, with these machines, we lose the artists that made these things first. We lose originality and talent. The absence of Peter for 20 years is a symbol to help the reader realize how much can change and advance in this amount of time....
