Answer At the beginning the writer focuses on Mr Hartop, which is the head of the family, the writer makes him seem so selfish, and his description creates a bad impression about him, we could see this when the writer says “he is thin, angular man, starved faced” the use of “angular” shows that he is very cold. The writer shows use that Hartop family are expressionless even they are in great pain, we see this when the writer says “the Hartop’s face seems moulded in clay”. The word “clay” suggests that there is no warmth and love in the family. The writer changes the focus of the source to emphasise more about the relationship between Mr Hartop and his daughter. Alice has been treated unfairly by father and we could emphasis on this when the writer says “Alice sat squeezed up, the girl with her arms flat as though ironed” this suggests that Alice is uncomfortable, and the adjective “ironed” means pressed which could suggests that Alice is been pressed and she's voiceless. This demonstrates that the Hartop family is one of a kind. This successfully engages the reader because there is more frequent tale to read....
