Description

The Sandman by Paul Barry Joshua Samaraweera Question: How does the director use events to show the theme?

The director, Paul Barry of the Sandman presents the idea of how children are blinded by the dark danger of reality, then they lose their innocence. The director shows this through camera angles such as Close-Up, Low Angles and Canted Angles, Mise-en-scene (lighting) and diegetic sound.

The director explores the theme of how children are blinded by the dark danger of reality, then they lose their innocence through the way they show the boy’s facial expressions which symbolises his emotional fears when he walks through the corridor. For Example, the director uses a Close-Up of the boy’s face to show how his emotional restraints are darkened by fear due to his lack of understanding his surroundings as he is blinded by the dark danger upon him. The director uses Mise-en-scene (lighting) by showing he effect of the shadows awakening him which represents dark danger as the boy stares helplessly to his only glow of safety when he’s near the corridor. This shows the theme of how children are blinded by the dark danger awaking his surroundings

upon him. Therefore, the director presents the boy as a feared character and unsighted by danger at the beginning of the film to show us how children are unknowing of jeopardy.

The director explores theme of how children are unaware of a threat beyond them through the way they show how the boy is unknowing of what’s upon him when the boy creeps up the staircase through a new universe where his emotions will be over shown by darkness. For Example, the director uses Low Angles and Canted Angles by showing his lack of awareness and danger when walking up the staircase helplessly. This tells the audience that the boy will face torture because of his blindness of danger which later on, the boy loses his innocence as he is walking up the staircase to a new world never before seen. The director also uses Diegetic Sounds of footsteps and howling to increase tension when the Sandman prepares to toy with the boy’s innocence when passing by the corridor to go up the staircase. This tells the audience that the boy is walking into danger which will change his life as he continuously walks up the staircase with no idea of what the future will bring due to his blindness of danger. This shows the theme of how children are blinded by the darkness of reality when fear approaches them. Therefore, the

director presents the boy as an innocent victim with no escape at the beginning of the film to show us how children are unconscious when danger is near.

The director explores the theme of how children are blinded by the dark danger of reality, then losing their innocence through the way they show the boy’s mood from calm to fear when sleeping in bed. For Example, the director uses Low Angles of the boy sleeping and the Sandman toying with the boy which shows supremacy towards the Sandman and a lack of power directed towards the boy. This tells the audience that the boy is helpless and how he’s being treated as a vulnerable character. The director also uses Diegetic Sounds of howling and synchronised footsteps as the Sandman starts to toy with the boy’s innocence in the bedroom. This tells the audience that he Sandman has been granted power to torture the boy’s emotions as the boy is unprotected and unsecured from danger. This shows the theme of how children are being exposed to danger which tends to have a lack of innocence towards children because the Sandman owns supremacy as the boy has lack of power and lost his protection and innocence. Therefore, the director presents the character as an unsecured and no power which to show that his innocence is forbidden by his blindness of danger at the

beginning of the film to show us how people are unprotected at all times even if you feel you’re safe when in reality all that’s actually around you are danger.

The director presents the idea of how children are blinded by darkness of reality which ends up in pain, death and loss of innocence showcasing it through the film to show us how the character is blinded by danger which shows the boy’s change in mood from calm to fear. However, the boy is made to be memorable because of the way the boy is portrayed when using Close-Up, Low and Canted Camera Angles, Mise-enscene (lighting) and Diegetic Sounds to make him seem a dull character who is unprotected, weak and powerless. The Sandman is the complete opposite of the boy by owning supremacy and the power to haunt kids for life. The Sandman is relevant in New Zealand today because it provides detail to how children are unfamiliar of the dark danger of reality and then losing their innocence which shows that we all get in a situation where we will be vulnerable and unprotected from danger which makes this film relevant because we must understand how calmness can turn into fear and how protection can turn into danger....
