EPIC OF IBALONG (An Analysis)

An archetype is an idea, symbol, pattern, or character-type, in a story. It is any story element that appears again and again in stories from cultures around the world and symbolizes something universal in the human experience. So, archetypes are part of the key to what makes a story compelling.

A long time ago, there was a rich land called Ibalong. Baltog, who came from Botavora of the brave clan of Lipod, came to this land where many monsters were still roaming in its very dark forests. He decided to stay and was the first to cultivate its field and to plant them with gabi. Then one night, a monstrous, wild boar known as Tandayag saw these field and destroyed the crops. When Baltog found out what had happened, he decided to look for this boar with all his courage and patience. As soon as he saw it, he wrestled with it. Baltog was unafraid, strong and brave. He was able to pin down the monstrous, wild boar and break apart its bones and with this, Tandayag died. The second hero who came to the land of Ibalong was Handyong. Together with his men, they had to fight thousands of battles and face many dangers to defeat monsters. Among their enemies, the serpent Oryol was the hardest to kill. Having a beautiful voice, Oryol could change its image to deceive its enemies. Handyong tried different ways to capture it but Oryol escaped every one of it and disappeared. Handyong tried to look for the serpent in the heart of the forest until Oryol came to admire his bravery and gallantry. Then the serpent helped the hero to conquer monsters thus, restoring the peace to the entire Ibalong. Then the giant Rabot, half man, half beast came with awesome and terrifying powers. Bantong, the third hero and a good friend of Handyong was ordered to kill the new monster. He took with him a thousand warriors to attack Rabot’s den. Looking around the den, Bantong discovered many rocks and these were the people who were turned into rocks by the monster. When Rabot was sleeping very soundly, Bantong came near him and cut him into two with his sharp bolo and Rabot died. So Ibalong was at peace once again.

In this epic, I found various archetypes. First is character archetypes. There are three heroes namely, Baltog who came from Batavora of the brave clan of Lipod, he slayed the great boar Tandayag with his bare hands. Second is Handyong, he came after Baltog and his great enemy is the serpent Oryol who deceives his enemies using his beautiful voice. Lastly is Bantong who fought with the monster Rabot, half man, half beast

whom he killed by cutting its body into two. The

antagonist in the story is the wild boar Tandayag, giant flying shark, monsters and Rabot.

I also found tradition archetypes, protecting one’s territory. Filipinos, specifically Bicolanos have this attitude that they do not want others to claim their own territory. We Filipinos are willing to fight until we die for our country. There is also action archetype in the epic. That is being brave and having a good wisdom. We, Bicolanos are brave and sagacious. We are not called “oragons” for nothing. We always think first before putting everything in action. The underlying theme of the epic of Ibalong is about taking care of the environment, being brave and become a hero in simple ways. Some symbols used in this epic is Oryol being the serpent. Oryol is seductive as well as deceitful. A serpent or snake symbolizes being cunning just like the snake in the bible....
