Task #3...

Description

Emily Olson Equity Pedagogy

A1: From a very early age my parents instilled in me the importance of education. I am a first-generation college student and my parents always pushed me to do my best in school to ensure my success in post-secondary education. In my household doing well in school was very important but, in the times, where I did not get the grade I wanted or was struggling in my classes I was always told that it was okay to fail and struggle sometimes if you are putting in the effort to achieve. I believe these expectations placed on me as a student can be brought to my classroom as a teacher. I think its important to have a teacher that pushes their students to work hard and do well but also cultivates a safe place where struggles and failures are not frowned upon but are used a learning tool.

A2: To me a stable social or family group looks like a place that is inclusive, free of judgement, and communicative. Children spend a lot of time in their classrooms and fostering a safe and healthy classroom by incorporating those elements for all types of students is something I believe is a major key in student success. Students will be much more comfortable asking questions and participating in classroom activities if they can trust that their classmates and teachers leading to educational success.

A3: I think that going to college and being able to interact with such a diverse spread of people all with different backgrounds will be a major influence in the classroom. It is extremely likely that as a teacher you will experience a plethora of different

backgrounds. Having the experience, I did in college will help me navigate what will be helpful, why a student might be struggling, why they could be acting a certain way, ect.

B: One characteristic that is affecting Ahmed’s ability to learn is his recently diagnosed Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) and specific Learning Disorder (SLD) in reading with its “emphasis being poor acquisition of phonological order.” Ahmed’s first language is not English by though he can communicate fluently in English his struggles with the academic language. Ahmed and his family’s first language is Arabic and he is fluent in English, French, and Arabic. This could be affecting Ahmed’s learning because trying to remember and learn the grammar and language rules of three different language is a challenge. One way to utilize equity pedagogy to positively impact the student would be incorporate some of Ahmed’s culture into classroom activities and to include his parents in his journey and struggles to ensure the student is receiving all the help he needs for success....
