Loyalty and betrayal in Macbeth

Point 1: macbeth's loyalty fluctuates throughout the duration of the play - At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is portrayed as a loyal and valiant hero of the war. - His character is loyal at heart but throughout the play many factors corrupt him and blind him. - Macbeth says that the opportunity to serve king duncan “ pays itself.” - This shows Macbeth genuinely values and honors him. - this juxtaposed: - Seen as a burden as opposed to duty (scene 4) - He refers - Fall down implies its an obstacle - In my way implies that loyalty is hindering his path to prosperity and prestige. - His initial loyalty at heart shines through when he is reluctant to kill King duncan. - “His kinsman and subject” - After duncans death, the obstacel=le of loyalty has been metaphorically “leaped over” so he is less hesitant when it comes to killing macduff’s family and banquo - His fluctuating loyalty especially in act 1 adds dimension to macbeths character whcih would intrigue and appeal to the audience Point 2: Loyalty is rewarded, betrayal is punished - Thane of cawdor is punished for treason - Macbeth is rewarded with title, thes king unknowing of macbeth's future regicide and larger scale betrayal - Betrayal of one's own morals - 4 simple words shift Macbeth's moral compass. - “ are you a man: - He ends up killing duncan when his manhood and cowardice is questioned, showing that perhaps macbeth prioritizes his manhood as opposed to his values and loyalty. - Kings divine right context Point 3: The macbeths pretend to be loyal - Look like the innocent flower but be the serpent in it - Biblical connotations appealed to JAcobean audience - Facade - Serpent associated with evil - Flower symbolizes purity and femininity - Lady macbeth and macbeth's power dynamic differs greatly from that of the time period context
