Unit Outline for Essential Mathematics 1 Algebra & Trigonometry, 2017 Study Period 3 ...
Unit Outline Essential Mathematics 1: Algebra and Trigonometry ENR 101 OUA Study Period 3 - 2017 External - Distance Education
Introduction Welcome On behalf of the teaching team, welcome to Essential Mathematics 1! This unit covers some basic mathematical concepts, which are useful in their own right in many careers, but which will also assist in preparing you for further studies in engineering. You will need to get into the habit of developing your algebra and trigonometry skills for about 10 hours each week. We have provided you with a Time Budget (both a poster and an online version) to help you determine how long to spend on each activity. If you are spending more than the recommended time doing an activity on your own, then it is time for you to seek help elsewhere. Thankfully, there are plenty of different types of support available, for example you can: • write a note to the eTutors in the forums and expect a quick reply, • attend virtual classroom helpdesk sessions and discuss your problems with your eTutors and others over a whiteboard, • access many of the useful web pages we have selected for you, • use OUA's smartthinking online tutor service (4 hours one-on-one support provided as part of your enrollment), or talk to any of your mathematically-minded friends around you. We will be sending you weekly updates as News Forum announcements on our learnonline web site to help keep you on track. We particularly look forward to seeing and hearing from you in our virtual classroom sessions if you can make it. We hope your experience in this unit will be a happy one and we look forward to meeting you online.

Additional assessment requirements To acheive a pass in this course, a student must acheive 50% in the overall assessment and a minimum of 40% of the available marks in the final examination.
Special Requirements A broadband connection is required. An Essential Mathematics 1 student will need an average of 1.6 GB per month for 3 months (total ~4.7 GB for the unit) to fully participate in this unit. This includes a single view of all online video lectures (2 hours x 12 weeks), virtual classroom consultations, assignments, learning activities, quizzes, communication etc. Each week there are opportunities for you to participate in real-time events using our virtual classroom. • The times and dates of the virtual classroom sessions are announced and will appear as upcoming events in our calendar. • The sessions will be geared around those problems that have proved most difficult for students (which is judged by looking at the forum posts for that week). • A headset microphone is required to interact with teachers using voice within the virtual classroom.

• You may also use web cams in this environment. However, you need to be aware that parts of these sessions are often recorded. Access to a means to create digital versions (pdf) of hand-written mathematics is required to submit assignments - this could be a scanner or a digital camera. Further information is available in the Assessment section of the unit website. Additional free software may be optionally downloaded and installed (e.g java, flash, shockwave) to fully interact with all the learning materials. Learnonline provides advice on getting started with online learning at UniSA - you may need to perform updates and adjust settings to improve your online experience.
Supervised assessment/exam This unit involves a supervised exam. Please be sure to read the section entitled 'Assessment Summary' later in this Unit Information. Alternatively, you can also access information about exam processes online at https://i.unisa.edu.au/Campus-Central/OUA/
Study schedule A table outlining the unit structure and study schedule is printed at the back of this guide. Please refer to it for important information regarding due dates for assignments.
Further Unit Information For many of you, this is your first experience of mathematics. Some will find the material quite difficult, but in the past students have found that the effort put into grasping the concepts is worthwhile. You are also studying online – which provides greater flexibility for you – but you will still need to find at least 10 hours each week to study this unit (See our Time budget). If you experience any technical problems accessing the material in the website– please call or email the IT helpdesk at UniSA as soon as possible. They can be reached on (08) 83025000 or [email protected] – they are available quite long hours, including weekends, to help you and your computer work well together.

Learning Resources Textbook(s) You will need continual access to the following text(s) to complete this Unit. The library does not hold multiple copies of the nominated text books. You are strongly recommended to purchase the book(s). Safier, F. 2012, Precalculus, 3rd, McGraw-Hill.
Reference(s) Please consider purchasing or accessing one of these Reference books if you learn best by reading printed material. The recommended textbook (Safier) offers little in the way of written explanation of concepts but its problem sets are integral to the unit. These reference books do provide much more detail of the mathematical concepts as (more expensive) printed books. • Croft, T & Davison, R . (2010). Foundation maths. 5th ed. Pearson Prentice Hall: London. • Stewart J, Redlin, L, & Watson, S. (2011). Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus Cengage, California, USA. For those people that don't mind reading screens and learn well by video demonstrations, our web site contains ample resources to support the learning of concepts.

There are five tests, in the form of online multiple choice quizzes. These will be available in weeks 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11, and are to be completed within the week. Each test may be attempted twice without penalty (and the best score retained). One successful strategy might be to attempt a test to find out what one needs to know, and after some preparation, try again. The tests are "open book", but there is a time-limit, so it is wise to prepare for them carefully. The time limit is 60 minutes for the first quiz, then 50 minutes for the second, then 40 for the third, 30 for the fourth and 20 minutes for the fifth. Practice quizzes are available for students to prepare for these quizzes.

This first Assignment will assess the material covered in Weeks 1 – 6 inclusive and is submitted in Week 7. The assignment will consist largely of problems similar to, and of about the same level of difficulty as, problems encountered in the study books. Some additional research may be required. Assignments should be submitted online as a single PDF document (...
