Ethically Dubious Conduct Case Study From a utilitarian’s point of view, I believe the conduct on Brenda’s list can be justified if it is done discreetly. If for example, you are an employee taking office supplies home for personal use and have told no one about it, then the maximization of happiness is achieved through your obtainment of new supplies and there is no unhappiness from any parties. I believe the matter of degree is a vital decider in the rightness and wrongness of some items. For example, if you are an employee who is constantly calling in sick when you need personal time, many of your coworkers will start to get upset as they most likely have to cover your lack of work attendance. Then the maximization of happiness would no longer be achieved. On the other hand, if you very rarely call in sick and your coworkers assume you are actually sick, then happiness is maximized through you getting your personal time. Although from Kantian’s point of view, I believe none of the conduct on Brenda’s list can be justified. An employee taking office supplies home for personal use is theft from the company which should be a governing universal law of conduct for most people. According to the Kantian’s perspective, no matter the degree of the conduct, it is most likely wrong if it involves lying and stealing from your coworkers and managers. An action can absolutely be both trivial and wrong as the answer depends on which perspective you want to look at it from. As an example, stealing a pad of paper may be okay from a utilitarian’s point of view, but wrong from a Kantian’s point of view....
