The Declaration of Independence: Ethos Logos Pathos and Kairos Tomas Jefferson uses ethos to show how far he and the colonies are willing to sacrifice for freedom. In the beginning of the declaration of independence Tomas Jefferson uses the phrases "we have" that are repeated multiple times in the beginning of the declaration of independence to show that they had pleaded and begged to their "British Brethren" and that the British are not listening . so after pleading and begging for action the Americans had decided the British brethren were "Enemies in war, in Peace Friends" Tomas Jefferson and the colonies are willing to go to war even with families to get freedom “Nor have we been wanting attention to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred, to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, enemies in war, in peace friends.” In the declaration of independence Thomas Jefferson uses pathos. by focusing on the emotional side of the declaration on self-evident truths, like men are created equal. Thomas Jefferson was able to inspire many people to fight for their freedom that they deserved. Thomas Jefferson uses pronouns all throughout the declaration and it

shows that it has a us vs. them mentality specifically by defining the American population as one people and Britain as another. This technique creates an emotional response which causes the audience to view British leadership only as an enemy, further justifying the need for independence.“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. To secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.” He also shows pathos by showing how much

everyone is willing to sacrifice like our lives, fortunes, and honor, it illustrates the amount of heart and passion that went into this document.“And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” Logos In the first paragraph of the Declaration of Independence it is telling the readers why this declaration of independence needs to be made in the first place. He states that there is a time when a society needs to break away from its past leader (Britain) and rely on the powers of God and the earth to create a new community. He is using logic to help his readers understand the meaning of this document. He continues to use logos in explaining why this declaration is important as he explains that it will “secure these rights,” which pertain to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Another time, logos is used in the declaration is when Jefferson is addressing all the wrongs the King of Britain did, and he lists them. “The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States."
