Description

1. Assess Everlane’s corporate citizenship using Caroll’s 4-Part definition of CSR. How does Everlane fulfil its responsibilities? Legal: Ethical: They are extremely dedicated to ethical production, involved in fair wages of their factory workers. Executives of Everlane attempt to build stronger and closer relationships with their workers, personally visiting their Chinese suppliers. Economic: I believe that Everlane has fulfilled its economic responsibilities as they strive to offer high-quality clothes at lower prices. They tried to raise the audit scores of their suppliers instead of immediately cutting ties, aware of the importance of building strong relationships with their suppliers, know that if they stopped working with them, factories would lose profit. Philanthropic: 2. What are the core values of Everlane? How has Everlane displayed them? How difficult is it for a small company like Everlane to commit itself to radical transparency? Everlane’s core values are to have radical transparency in anything they do. They have publicized the cost of making their products, posted photos and videos of their factory workers, and enforced a rule for their factories to make their cost and audit scores public. 3. How does Everlane's approach to its supply chain differ from that of global giants, such as Nike? I would say that Nike is profit maximising, where they intend to cut costs in order to profit as much as possible, outsourcing to factories with substantially low cost of productions, without much thought about the conditions of the factory workers. As discussed in a previous case, Nike claims that they pay their workers above the minimum wage in the respective countries, but in many scenarios the minimum wage is not sufficient for the workers to be a leading a decent life. But Everlane is more focused on the well-being of their factory workers, to the extent of caring about the presence of hot water, heating or air conditioning for their workers in their dorms. They are willing to perhaps pay more just for their workers to be in comfortable conditions, not just when working, but even after work. Low prices, high quality clothes, price of clothes are justified, moral management. everlane - sources of suppliers that are willing to be transparent and accountable - control costs and quality in their current model - shares production costs with customers Nike -

4. Do you think Everlane’s business model is sustainable? After reading the case, are you more inclined to purchase Everlane’s products? I do think that Everlane’s business model is sustainable. In a world where consumers are more interested in the business practices of a company, Everlane’s honesty portrays the company in a positive light, especially since the clothing industry is ridden with deceit. I believe that they also educate consumers on Everlane’s larger commitment to sustainability, which makes customers feel good about buying more from them. However, after looking at Everlane’s prices, I don’t think I will be purchasing clothes from them now, as they are priced quite high for my taste.

If they continue to grow, they might not be able to keep track of their ethical practices. 5. What are the different ways that a fashion company can be ethical?...
