Adrianna Taylor Dr. Matson HS 1005 October 16, 2017 House: The Socratic Method In this episode of House, the Socratic Method is used to make decision for and about the patient. According to Oh and Reamy, “The Socratic Method, in its pure form, births a new level of understanding in learners.” They had to look at all possibilities to conclude what was going on with the patient. The doctors use a variety of lenses when caring for the patient. Dr. Gregory House is ends based. He cares more that the patient lives in the end. He is interested in finding the problem and solving it. Dr. Eric Foreman is also ends bases but to a certain extent he is rules based. I feel that Dr. Alison Cameron and Dr. Robert Chase are care based. Dr. Cameron considered the fact that the patient was a 38-year-old single mother. Quality of life is a medical principle that is used in this situation. The patient’s life is the only concern. Every doctor in the episode focuses on stopping and preventing the issues that the patient is having. The fact that she is a single mother, they also want to do what is best for her child. Confidentiality is also a factor here; the patient’s son brings it up to Dr. House because he is a minor and doesn’t want child services to get involved. Another medical principle involved is justice. The idea of equal care comes into play because the patient is schizophrenic. She spits in Dr. Foreman’s face, however, he still had to provide her with the care that she needed. I look at this situation through an ends based lens. However, I could also be considered care based. I think the outcome of the patient’s health is very important. On the other hand, the patient is a single parent. The well-being of her son must be taken into consideration. In this

case, I would have contacted child services as well because the child needs to be cared for. I think this was the best decision. He was only placed in a home for the day that his mother spent in the hospital. At the end he could go home with his mom.
