Description

I read the story 'The boarding House' written by 'James Joyce'. I liked that story very much because it reflects the truth of the society and love of a young boy and a girl. It is a story about the love and relationship between 'Polly', a beautiful young girl of 19 and a boy 'Mr. Doran' in early 20th century in Dublin. Polly was the daughter of Mrs. Mooney. She has two adult children, a son, 'Jack' and a daughter, 'Polly'. She was the daughter of a butcher and was very confident, determinant and intelligent woman. She was married to her father‘s helper. Then, she started her own business by opening a butcher shop. Her husband was not a good person. He was a drunkard and quarrel all the time with his wife, 'Mrs. Mooney' and once attacked her with a cleaver. Then she separated from her husband by getting permission from the priest and decided to survive as a single woman and mother. Then she opened a boarding house where her lodgers were mostly office workers and artists. Mr. Doran was a lodger in her boarding house and her pretty young girl Polly fall in love with him. Mrs. Mooney silently used to watch her daughter flirting with the lodgers but didn’t interfere. When her daughter Polly made a deep relationship with Mr. Doran, then she decided to intervene. She asked her daughter that she wanted to talk to Mr. Doran. She was happy with their relationship because he had a good job and belonged to the good family. When Polly told Doran that her mother had known their secret relationship then Doran confused because he did not want to marry Polly. He was thinking that Polly was the daughter of a butcher and was not an educated girl. Miss Polly loved Mr. Doran and wanted to marry him. So, she started weeping but Doran made her comfortable. Miss Polly was worried about what Doran and her mother would decide. Then Mrs. Mooney called Polly and said that Mr. Doran wanted to speak her. The story ends in a suspense....
