Please read full instructions before commencing writing Exam paper information •

This paper consists of FOUR questions.

Students should answer ALL FOUR questions.

Special instructions •

Answer each question in a separate script book.

Students should assume reasonable values for any data not given in a question nor available on a datasheet, and should make any such assumptions clear on their script.

Students in any doubt as to the interpretation of the wording of a question, should make their own decision, and should state it clearly on their script.

Please write your name in the space indicated at the right hand side on the front cover of the answer book. Also enter your examination number in the appropriate space on the front cover.

Write ONLY your examination number on any extra sheets or worksheets used and firmly attach these to the answer book(s).

This examination will be marked anonymously.

Special items •

Convenor of Board of Examiners: Professor Y Lu External Examiner: Professor M Soutsos

Question 1 a)

b)

c)

d)

e)

List the Engineering Council four fundamental principles that should guide engineers and technicians in achieving the high ideals of professional life.

(4)

Provide a definition of the term ‘infrastructure’ and list 5 different examples of what infrastructure might be. In your answers, ensure you indicate what function your examples provide as well as their features.

(5)

In the context of Fire Engineering, what are the three main objectives for any Fire Safety Strategy?

(3)

Consider the hydrological catchment in Figure 1d. (i) List the main hydrological processes that add or remove water to the catchment. (ii) Write an equation that represents the catchment scale water budget over a time interval Dt. Consider the free body diagram shown in Figure 1e. (i) What is the total vertical reaction at point A? (ii) What moment should be applied at point A to prevent any rotation?

Question 2 Consider the power plant scheme and the assigned data in Figure 2 (overleaf). a) Compute the water pressure at the axis of the low pressure tunnel entrance (point A) when the water level in the reservoir is at 1880 m (a.s.l.); b)

c)

d)

e)

(3)

Identify the elevation of the water column (in m a.s.l.) in the Surge shaft (point B) when the power plant is at rest (no energy production) and the reservoir water level is as indicated in Figure 2;

(4)

Compute the magnitude, direction and application point (in m a.s.l.) of the force per unit wall width acting on the dam wall for the conditions in Figure 2;

(8)

Compute the magnitude of the force acting on the circular closing valve (diameter equal to penstoke’s diameter) located at the turbine axis (point C) when the power plant is at rest and the reservoir level is at 1880 m (a.s.l.);

(4)

The level of the reservoir drops to 1870 m a.s.l. Compute the power developed by the stream at the turbine axis (point C). Assume that the hydraulic efficiency is h=0.89.

Question 3 a)

Consider the scenario shown in Figure 3 below. Identify and list six hazards. For each of these state: i. What you consider the potential harm to be; ii. What should be done to protect against this harm.

b)

(13)

A new prison is to be constructed in Causton in Midsomer, England. There are four Construction Companies bidding for the work. Local community groups have objected to the prison as they believe it will cause disruption and have a negative impact on the reputation of the town. To compensate the community for any disruption and perceived negative impacts, the Chair of the Planning Committee asked one of the bidders (Bedlow Construction) to include a new Community Skills Academy in the proposed design. Bedlow Construction is an international firm, with a strong internal focus on ethical behaviour. The project team has successfully built many prisons in the past. Bedlow Construction’s proposal is accepted and the prison is approved by the Planning Committee. Identify at least one ethical breach.

c)

30 people apply for a new graduate position at a large engineering consultant. 15 applicants are female and 15 of the applicants are male. The (male) chair of the appointment committee shortlists 10 candidates. All of them are male. (i) Is this an acceptable situation? Explain your answer. (ii) You are junior engineer working elsewhere in the company and find out that no women were shortlisted. What would you do?

(3)

c)

Write down the equations for vertical and horizontal equilibrium

(2)

d)

Find the vertical reactions in terms of 𝑥

(7)
