2.2 business location and facilities Location has its own advantages and disadvantages for the success of any business. Hence, it is very important to think strategically to select the location of the business. There should be certain parameters to be considered before making a decision in selecting site locations. Closeness to the target customers, accessibility, convenience and availability of raw materials are among others. Based on the above facts mentioned, we recommend Bule Hora town to be Tables 2 location and facilities

2.3 The business ownership The partnership 10th star printing press is an independent business firm, which is fully owned by the partner enterprise.

3. SERVICE 3.1 service description Printing operation The workflow of any printing industry should passes alone for major parts, which are the management, pre-press, printing, and post press. As our printing press is supposed to be, middle level printing press it will contain these major parts and are discussed below in detail. vii

Prepress There are different systems of photo typesetting. All of them rely on the basic principles that the letters are assembled ultimately into photographic film or paper. The film or the paper can then be assembled to make a complete page. In this case, the paper has to be photographed in to film. Our printing press will own a state-of-the-art prepress facility, which will contain a computer to plate (CTP) equipment.

Printing The process of printing the plates using off set printers. There are four major processes in the printing industry  Letter press  Flexography  Offset lithography  Gravure Letterpress and flexography prints from a raised surface and it’s distinguished by sharp, crisp printing

but produce

grainy

images and sharp breaks in gradient tints and vintages.

Lithography, which prints from a plane surface, is characterized by soft, smooth transitions of color and tones. Gravure, which prints from sunken surface, has long tone scale and strong saturated color. In most cases, however, factors such as cost, availability and adaptability of equipment, speed of machinery are the main considerations in the source of selecting printing technologies rather than the quality and appearance of the image. The decline of the letterpress process has been so rapid and pronounced that many printers consider it either dead or almost so. Despite its decline, it should not be viewed as an outdated process. A sizeable portion of the total printing in southern Oromia as well as in our countries using the letterpress. Although decline might continue, it’s unlikely that the process should be considered alive and well for several reasons.

There are many areas in various printing where letterpress can perform more efficiently and cheaper than any

other

process. The

process is also ideal for

short run, high quality

reproduction. Moreover letterpresses are easily adaptable to the areas of die cutting, creasing, perforating and foil sampling. Offset lithography is the latest and most popular of the three major printing processes. The separations of image and non-image areas, which are on the same plane, are maintained chemically by the principle that grease and water do not mix. The basic difference is the manner in which ink is placed on paper: offset is first from plate to rubber blanket and then from blanket to paper. viii

One major advantage of this process is that the soft rubber surface as compared to letterpress metallic plates creates a clearer impression on a wide variety of papers and other materials. Offset lithography also allows extensive use of illustrations with a minimum of press make ready. Lithography

at first used smooth porous stones. Later it was found that grained metal plates of zinc, copper or aluminium could be curved around a press cylinder which made it possible for the high-speed lithography of today. The word offset refers to the processes that transfer an image to paper by means of three cylinders instead two as in the case letterpress. The inked and the watered plate prints on a rubber blanket, which in turn offset this impression to the paper, which is held to the impression cylinder. During the preparation stage of the printing plate, the printing image areas is

renderedwater receptive water receptive and ink repellent. Gravure is mainly used for carton printingand related advertising purposes widely used for packaging print and labelling of products.

Post press This process is also known as ‘the beauty salon’ of the printing press where the items are trimmed, sewed, and bind to be able to make them very attractive. In this process, of activities will be carried out including laminating, punching, eyeleting and folding.

Production process The design / creative stage In the design, stage the designer prepares the design of the product taking into account be overall look and feel of the paper. Text to be printed is typed and graphics to be shown are created. Designing of graphics is of two types, halftone and line art. Halftone is the reproduction of continuous-tone artwork (such as photography) through the application of a screen that converts the image into dots of various sizes. Line art is the art that is made up of continuous lines such as pen & ink drawings or typefaces. There is no tonal difference from one area to another. After designing the designer sets page layout and the design is sent to the prpress department.

The prepress stage In the pre-press stage the artwork is taken from its delivered state (either reflective art or digital file) all the way to the press plates. In pre-press stage: the art work is transformed to negative film either by imaging a digital file through an image setter, or by shooting reflective artwork with a copy camera. The pages are stripped together into a flat that reflects how the pages will be printed on the press sheet. The flat is burned onto a metal plate. After the flat is burned onto the

ix

plate, the plate is washed in the developing chemical. Developed plate is wrapped around the press cylinder. For the purpose of this feasibility, this process will be outsourced because of the high capital cost of machinery and equipment used in the process and the infrequent use of machinery.

The printing stage The printing stage covers the transfer of an image to paper. Offset lithography is based upon the principle that, “the ink and water do not mix”. The paper is fed through thepress from a pile of paper already cut to the size of the machine. Offset printing presses print at a high speed. When a printing plate is made, the printing image is rendered ink-receptive and water-repellent, while the non-printing areas are rendered water-receptive and ink-repellent. The ink is distributed to the plates through a series of rollers. On the press, the plates are dampened, first by water rollers, and then ink rollers. The rollers distribute the ink from the ink fountain onto the plates. The image area of the platespicks up ink from the ink rollers. The water rollers keep the ink off of the non-image areas of the plate. Each plate then transfers its image to a rubber blanket that in turn transfers the image to paper. The plate itself does not actually touch the paper. All of this occurs at a high speed. During thprocess the machine man checks the blending of inks to maintain the colour control. Print quality is checked frequently by the press operator.

The bindery stage The bindery stage is when any trimming, folding, perforating, collating, stitching, or gluingis performed as required. Mostly, printing press performs the trimming and folding in- house, and works closely with an outside bindery on the collating, stitching and gluing.

5 Marketing Strategy 5.1 Pricing strategy 10th star printing service will adapt a price matching strategy rather than entry pricing. Our survey of both in regional and national level did reveal the following:  Pricing per page of duplication– decreasing/increasing price as the page number requested to be duplicated increasing or decreased. Project pricing – this mainly based on the business dealing with be same enterprise for a longer period of time  Creativity pricing- as part higher learning institutions we will adapt a pricing strategy that will promote creative writing (to promote academicians to write more and be rewarded.)

5.2 Promotion strategy Experts in the marketing area suggested that some combination of following marketing and promotional strategies to reach a broad spectrum of customer groups  Networking and referrals – this is mainly base itself on utilizing existing contacts and clients so as to establish a larger network of potential clients.  Web promotion - in this information age internet is an ultimate weapon to showcase our capacity, hence, electronic brochures could help us to inform our customers  Advertising – using exiting regi...
