BSc BIT, Requirements Engineering Prof. Dr. Rainer Telesko
Requirements Engineering Exercise 1: Clear communication Goal: Describe an object so well that your partner can recognize it •
Restriction: touch the objects, but do not look at it
•
Describe: form, material, components, etc.
•
Try to describe the characteristics of the object so well that your partner can recognize the object
Write down the following •
Keywords of the description
•
The ideas your partner has along the way (what the object could be)
Mode: •
Work in groups of 2 - 3 people
•
Time: 10 minutes
Exercise 2: Elicitating requirements for a Mobile App You are a business analyst in an IT company which specializes in apps. You get a call from the head of the FHNW, who is interested to make business with you. The FHNW would like to have an app, which accompanies the students in the work and helps to reduce the daily stress. Therefore student satisfaction can be increased. Up to now the FHNW representatives have no detailed picture of the features of the app. They would like to hear the feasible and useful proposals and ideas of the IT company. You are interested in the job and start working. Think about how you can generate (as compared to well-known existing applications like Social media apps) a real added value. Mode: •
Work in teams of 3 - 4 people
•
Write down approx. 10 – 15 concrete requirements for the app
•
Electronic documentation in Word / PowerPoint
•
Time: 20 minutes

Exercise 3: Identifying stakeholders (Discussion) Acme AG is a large foodstuffs company – similar to Coop or Migros. This company uses an ancient Cobol system to manage products and inventory. There is a separate accounting system and point-of-sale system – both modern. The PoS system exports data on sales into both of the other systems. In order to create reports on deliveries, sales, etc, there is a random collection of individual Excel and Access tools that import and process data from the Cobol system. The company wants to replace the Cobol system as well as Excel and Access tools with a modern product management system. The PoS system and the accounting system will remain; the export interface of the PoS system will, of course, have to be adapted. The project manager for this project is the IT department head, Rolf Müller, who can provide technical information about the current system. However, he is an IT-expert, not an expert on the industry. Who are the stakeholders for this project? If you need to know more about the internal structure of the company, make some reasonable assumptions.
