Experiment #7 Report Connor Morris Chem 253 – 014: Peter Rietgraph Lab: Fractional Distillation 10/5/2016 Purpose The purpose of this lab was to separate heptane and hexane by fractional and simple distillation. Theory The substances used in this experiment were n-hexane and n-heptane. These structures are both volatile and evaporate very quickly. When the temperature of a solution of this structure is increased, the vapor concentration of the compound is also increased. Simple distillation separates two molecules by taking advantage of their boiling points as long as their boiling points are 40-50 degrees apart. The substance with the lower boiling point evaporates first which then moves up the column, and then condensed to its pure form.
