Savannah Warner TA: Janika Sweeney Section: 12 Experiment 1: Purification of Benzil by Crystallization February 18, 2020 Post Lab 1. The melting point range of our recrystallized Benzil was between 83- 85 degrees Celsius while the melting point range of the pure Benzil is between 94- 95 degrees Celsius. I would say that our recrystallized Benzil needed more drying rather than recrystallization because when we took it out of the beaker it was still pretty damp and could have been more dry in which case we would have also been able to get more of the Benzil out of the beaker hopefully improving our %Recovery as well. 2. During the recrystallization of Benzil other solvents could have been used. I think solvents like Acetone and 2-Propanol could have been used. We could use these solvents because they are polar molecules, but not more polar than ethanol is. The solvent needs to be less polar because Benzil is a less polar compound than Benzoin so the solvent should be slightly less polar. 3. The solvents that should not be used for recrystallization because they are not good for

the recrystallization of Benzil include; hexanes, toluene, and petroleum ether because these compounds are polar and “likes dissolve likes”. Since Benzil is a polar compound it needs a polar solvent to be able to dissolve....
