Description

SOC 101 – Spring 2021

Extra Credit Activity for Discussion Section (Optional) Throughout this semester, we have read many articles on multiple topics that try to explain social world issues. Each of us may relate to some topics more than others due to our specific positionalities, experiences, and so on. Thus, this activity is designed in a way to allow people to choose their own topic of interest and hopefully benefit from this activity. The final project for this would be a 5-minute presentation with following instructions. Choose a specific real-world example that you are familiar with. This could be something related to yourself or someone you know, or it could be a more public issue that you are interested in to investigate further. In the latter case, you may use a specific news story to express your topic of choice. Then, choose one of the readings from this semester that connects very well with your topic/issue, and try to use the reading (its theory, findings, etc.) to analyze your topic further. In other words, I want you to apply one of the readings from this semester to a realworld example of your choice. You will then present your project in class (for approximately 5 minutes) either on April 30 or May 7 (whichever you prefer). You should have a PowerPoint for your presentation with at least 3 slides that include: -

A brief discussion or explanation of your topic. What are you going to discuss? And why are you interested in it?

-

The reading you are using to analyze your topic and a short summary of it (so the class would recall the whole reading).

-

The application of the reading to your topic. Basically, this part would be your analysis.

You should notify me through email by April 26, if you are planning to do this extra credit presentation. Please include in your email a very short description of your topic and the reading you are going to use for it, as well as the date you prefer to present your work. (Make sure that I confirm your topic then.) You may get up to 3 points for this activity for your discussion section grade, based on the organization, analytical depth, and clarity of your presentation. (If you are getting the full 40 points for discussions, extra credits won’t be applied to other assignments of the course. So, don’t do it if you don’t need it!)...
