Description

Extra Credit Exam #2 Questions Question #1: When explaining how different diseases occur, which explanation would be an acceptable explanation in terms of the “Western medical paradigm”? a) Lung cancer comes from smoking b) Low birth weight comes from eating legumes during pregnancy c) Vomiting results from a curse from an ancestor d) Stomach lesions result from envy Answer #1 and Rationale: a) Lung cancer comes from smoking The answer is a) because western medicine relies on science and facts to diagnose and treat a disease. There have been countless studies done on smoking and its correlation to lung disease. Therefore, this answer has been backed up by scientific fact. Where as answers b) – d) rely on “other factors” like eating habits, supernatural explanations and emotions to identify the cause of an illness. For example, Nigerians often explain illness through the supernatural and the Hmong often explain illness though emotional stresses. It is for these reasons that the correct answer would be a). This is a good question to ask on an exam because it demonstrates understanding and application of a concept from week eight. For example, in order for a student to answer this question they must first understand the definition for “western medical paradigm”. Then, they must be able to apply their knowledge and use their interpretive skills to determine which option fits the “western medical paradigm” definition best. Therefore, requiring the student to think deeper versus simply stating what they memorized. Question #2: When talking about elements that make effective health programs, which statements are true? i) Aims should be specific to a particular health problem ii) Objectives do not need to be measurable iii) Goals and targets differ because goals are more broad a) Only i b) Only iii c) i, ii and iii d) i and iii Answer #2 and Rationale: d) i and ii

The answer is d) because according to the information in the lecture “Elements of Effective Health”, the powerpoint states that goals are broad statements, aims are specific to particular health problems, objectives need to be specified in measurable terms and targets need to specify various points on the way to the attainment of the objective. From this information we automatically know that i) is true and ii). Moreover, we can also use this information to infer that goals and targets differ because goals are supposed to be more broad in comparison to targets, thus proving that iii) is true as well. Therefore, the only correct answer for this question is d) i and iii. This is a good question to ask on an exam because it demonstrates to the professor that the student went over the lecture from week nine and studied from the powerpoint. Moreover, it also demonstrates that the student was not only able to memorize important facts, but also make interpretations about the facts versus simply just stating them verbatim. This also indicates to the professor that the student has a deeper understanding of the concept. Question #3: Doctors Without Borders is an example of a public-private partnership involved in global health. a) True b) False Answer #3 and Rationale: b) False The answer is b) because a public-private partnership is a contractual arrangement between a public agency (federal, state, local) and a private sector entity. The sectors will work together to provide a service or facility to the public. However, Doctors Without Borders does not have a contractual arrangement with a public agency. In fact, Doctors Without Borders would be considered a nongovernmental organization (NGO). An example, of a public-private partnership would be The Global Alliance for TB Drug Development because is organization has a contractual arrangement with a public sector to provide TB vaccines as a service for the people. This is a good exam question to ask because it addresses a topic not heavily covered in the week ten lecture. However, it pertains to information that should have been covered in the week ten required reading for chapter fifteen. Therefore, it demonstrates to the professor that the student it keeping up with readings and is taking sufficient notes from the readings. Moreover, this type of question requires knowledge about two topics: what a public-private partnership is and examples of various NGOs (covered in exam block one). Thus demonstrating to the professor that the student is able to able previous knowledge to new topics. Question #4: Despite the fact that Botswana is one of Africa’s wealthier nations, this country is in a life and death struggle with which infectious disease?

a) TB b) Polio c) HIV/AIDs d) Smallpox Answer #4 and Rationale: c) HIV/AIDS The answer for this question can be determined by watching the “Rx for Survival: Can Anyone Save Botswana?” video in week six. The introduction of the video states: “Near the tip of Africa lies Botswana, one of the continent’s wealthier nations. With its bustling streets and well dressed citizens, it’s hard to imagine that this country is in a life and death struggle with an infectious disease”. This opening proves that the answer for this question can be found in this video. Furthermore, as we continue to watch the video we find that the topic revolves around HIV/AIDs. Therefore, it is a logical assumption that the “infectious disease” the introduction refers to is HIV/AIDs. This is a good question to ask on an exam because it demonstrates to the professor that the student is actually watching the required videos. Moreover, it also demonstrates that the student is not just reading summaries of the video. But rather, is actually watching the videos from start to finish and paying attention to the details within the video....
