Chapter #12 Theories of Charismatic and Transformational Leadership Astro Airlines 1. Describe Burton’s leadership behavior. Burton has chosen to be a transformational leader in his company and among all his employees. Transformational leadership is a type of leadership that the leader gets all his or her employees to be encouraged, inspired and motivated and to help them become creative and make necessary changes that helps the company to grow and become successful. Burton is a dynamic and a great speaker that influences all people around the company. He takes the opportunity to teach the employees about his vision and make them believe that they are capable of doing almost anything. Transformational leaders inspire and motivate their work environment and Burton regularly reminds his team members of the purpose of the work. And he knows that his present have a huge impact on his team, so he represents integrity in all of his working relationships. Burton’s leadership style requires him to trust well trained employees to take authority over decisions in their assigned jobs. His leadership policy gives employees and staff more room to be creative, look to the future and find new solutions to problems. Instead of the typical bureaucratic organization, his company involves three levels of management and few support staff. Company’s qualities and policies, include equality, informality, participative leadership, and self‐management. So under Burton’s leadership space, Managers are hired to give direction but not to dictate methods or police efforts. Employees are told to carry out multiple jobs and to learn new skills. Burton’s leadership brings commitment and creativity among its employees and this leads the company to its early growth and reputation. 2. Was Burton a charismatic leader in the company at this time? Explain your answer. Absolutely, Burton was a charismatic leader in his entire company. He usually inspires staff to get things done or improve the way certain things are done. His charismatic leadership makes all his company’s staff believe they could achieve anything for the better of self‐ growth and company. In this case study, there are the five qualities that made Burton a charismatic leader: confidence, creativity, vision, determination, and communication. You

can also work to improve your own charisma and to become a better leader in any organization. 3. What dysfunctional aspects of charismatic leadership were displayed by Burton? After a quick growth of the company, problems began happening internally because of some dysfunctional aspects of Burton’s leadership. Burton wanted to turn Astro Airlines from a small regional airline to an international one. He made some mistakes and failed to bring success in his company. Lack of infrastructure management while the company grew and miscommunication with the employees affected the company in many ways. Burton was not aware of major airlines that were stronger financially and were ready to start price cutting war. Astro ended up being unsuccessful in attracting many business travelers accustomed to frills and better service. The company began to experience losses instead of profits.

Actually Burton strategy of discount fares did not last for long so the losses increased rapidly and the company entered bankruptcy.
