FCPX: Transitions, Effects, Keyframes, Transform TRANSITIONS To make a VIDEO TRANSITION: • Click on the TRANSITIONS BROWSER BUTTON • Select a Transition and drop it between two clips on the Timeline • Change the duration of the transition by grabbing one end of it and stretching it Tip: 10 frame dissolve or “soft cut” is popular in trailers. You can only dissolve as much as you have “handles” in your media. Once you have reached the end of a clip, there is nothing to dissolve with.

EFFECTS To ADD EFFECTS to a clip: • Select the clip in the Timeline • Click on the EFFECTS BROWSER BUTTON • Hover the mouse over any of the Video Effects thumbnails, and scrub back and forth • A real-time preview of the effected clip will appear in the Viewer • Double-click on the Video Effect thumbnail to apply it to the clip • You can apply multiple effects to any clip • Adjust the parameters of the clip in the Inspector • Adjust effects values over time by using KEYFRAMES • To DELETE an Effect from a clip, select it in the Inspector and hit Delete KEYFRAMES A KEYFRAME denotes the value of a video or audio effect parameter at a particular point in the Timeline. When two keyframes with different values are set in Final Cut Pro, a transition from one value to another is calculated, resulting in a dynamic change to that clip. To ADD KEYFRAMES to a clip: • CONTROL+CLICK on the desired clip • A pop-up box will appear. Select SHOW VIDEO ANIMATION • Your Video Effect will appear at the top of the Video Animation box • OPTION+CLICK anywhere on the clip to set a Keyframe • Adjust the Keyframe settings in the INSPECTOR 1

2 • Set another Keyframe elsewhere in the same clip, and make adjustments in the Inspector • To adjust the position of the Keyframe on your clip, simply click and drag • To DELETE a Keyframe, CONTROL+CLICK on the Keyframe TRANSFORM Every clip has a set of motion controls available for that clip. You can change the Position, Rotation, Scale, and Anchor point.

To TRANSFORM an entire clip: • Select the clip in the Timeline • In the Transform box in the INSPECTOR, adjust values as desired

To TRANSFORM a clip OVER TIME (using KEYFRAMES): • CONTROL+CLICK on the desired clip • A pop-up box will appear. Select SHOW VIDEO ANIMATION • Click on the RULER to place the playhead at the point in the clip where you want to set a Keyframe • In the bottom left of the VIEWER, click on the TRANSFORM button • On the top left of the Viewer, click on the Keyframe button to set a Keyframe • Make adjustments in the INSPECTOR • In the Timeline, set the playhead at a different point in the clip • In the Viewer, click on the Keyframe button to set another Keyframe • Adjust values as desired in the Inspector
