FedEx Corporation's Mission statements...
FedEx Corporation's Mission statements
FedEx Corporation is an American global courier delivery services company headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee. They offer express and fast delivery transportation services, delivering an estimated 3 million packages daily all around the globe. Its services include overnight courier, ground, heavy freight, document copying, and logistics services. As I am a supply chain manager in my company, FedEx is one of the transportation service providers to my company for several years. That’s why I chose the mission statements of FedEx Corporation. You can see the following their mission statements.
-. FedEx will produce superior financial returns for shareowners by providing high value-added supply chain, transportation, business, and related information services through focused operating companies. -. Customer requirements will be met in the highest quality manner appropriate to each market segment served. -. FedEx will strive to develop mutually rewarding relationships with its employees, partners, and suppliers. -. Safety will be the first consideration in all operations. -. Corporate activities will be conducted to the highest ethnical and professional standards.
As you know well, good mission statements define the core values of management. It helps a company itself to the public as well as identifies and responds to various stakeholders (1) more than a product, service, and financial results. The purpose of this essay is 1) to evaluate whether the components identified in the literature are well adopted in the mission statements and 2) to analyze whether the website of the company reflects the mission statements.
Firstly, to evaluate how mission statements of FedEx Corporation are well crafted, I used Pearce, J. A., & David, F. R. (1987) model that employs nine components in assessing mission statements. (2) Table 1 summarizes my analysis result that well-crafted 9 components are present in their mission statements with their language.
Secondly, I compared all FedEx websites to analyze whether they reflect the mission statements. (Summarized in Table 1). Overall FedEx websites employ and display well for his scope of operation (overview of services page), who is the customer (overview of the company in investor relations page), the purpose of the organization (Investor relations page), public image (global citizenship program, environment program, safety program pages ), and their technology ( innovation pages and many software introduction pages)
Consequently, the first sentence of FedEx's mission statement is “ FedEx will produce superior financial returns for shareowners”. It means that they are always trying to make money for stakeholders and they are displaying facts and reports of their results in their main “ Investor relations page” at every time.
