Description

Becka Bahn-1st Hour Fictional Case Study: Abnormal Psychology-Dysthymia Harper is a 17 year old teenage girl who attends Triad High School and works at her local Walgreens. She is on the Honor Roll. She is involved in many activities and clubs at her school and is even captain of the Softball team. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her friends and going to the movies with her family. However, recently her boyfriend, Liam, of three years broke up with her and started dating her old best friend. This caused Harper an enormous amount of stress and upset her because she thought Liam was the love of her life. After the break up, Harper began to act differently. She began to feel hopeless and angry all of the time. Her energy and participation in her clubs were close to nonexistent. She became completely uninterested in working hard at softball practice and ignored her duty as captain to pump up the team before a game. Her body became fatigued and she lost her appetite. Harper barely slept because all she could do was think about Liam. In school, her grades have dropped because she cannot concentrate. Everyday when Harper looks in the mirror she says “I hate myself, why doesn’t Liam still like me?” Harper is tired of feeling this way and mentions her thoughts to her mother, who suffers from major depression.

Harper’s mother takes her to a doctor and she is diagnosed with Dysthymia. She is upset but realizes with therapy and medication, she can begin to feel happy again....
