Description

Fimbriated folds and Sublingual folds There are two folds associated with the ventral surface of the tongue. 1. The FIMBRIATED FOLDS are actually located on the ventral surface of the tongue, laterally to the lingual veins. Their free edge may have a series of fringe-like processes, but they may only appear as minor small “bumps”. They are normal residual tissue which was not completely reabsorbed during the growth and development of the tongue.

The openings of the ducts of the sublingual glands are located along and towards the ends of these folds. Each one ends in a small papilla (sublingual caruncle) which is the location of the opening of the duct of the submandibular gland, and of the largest of the sublingual ducts as well.
