Summary This study aimed to determine the Effects of having OFW Parents on Socio - Behavioral Development of Grade 7 and 8 Junior High School Students in Bauan Technical High School. The researchers applied the Pearson’s Correlation Test and stratified random sampling to determine and analyze the vii

relationship between the effects of having OFW parents on socio-behavioural development of grade 7 and 8 students that were in the range of 12-14 years of age in Bauan Technical High School and the respondent’s demographic profile. The respondents of the study consists of 310 Junior High School students who have OFW parents, 159 respondents from grade 7 students and 151 respondents from grade 8 students who were asked to answer the questionnaire to gather adequate and relevant information needed in this study. The questionnaire provided questions which aimed to gather information about the profile of the respondents as well as the data related to the problem. A 34 item five-point likert-scale 2015 version questionnaire by Joseph Mutie, B.A. from Machakos County, Kenya is the data gathering instrument used to measure the effects of parental absence on socio-behavioural development of left behind children. It is a commonly used instrument for quantifying level of effects of parental absence. It is widely known and has been tested for content and constructs validity. The researchers used the percentage method in interpreting the profile and the level of the effects on the respondents. Based from the results, the respondents from Bauan Technical High School were mostly 13 years old, female, from grade 7 and having their fathers working abroad. Based from the results, most of the respondents experience moderate level of effects in terms of parental presence, experience low level of effects on the challenges faced and issues on socio-behavioural development aspect and high level on their insights on how the parents should treat their children. There is no significant relationship between the effects of having OFW viii

parents on the socio-behavioural development of grade 7 and 8 students and the age as well as parent(s) working abroad. There is a significant relationship between the effects of having OFW parents on the socio-behavioural development of grade 7 and 8 students and the gender as well as grade level.

CHAPTER I The Problem

INTRODUCTION The Philippines is one of the countries where a significant number of its people are working overseas in different parts of the world. Knowing that Philippine government offers a low salary even in some professionals that’s why many would prefer to work abroad for better job opportunities and higher salary. Separation from parents is a common situation for youth in the Philippines since many parents leave their families for years to provide the daily needs of their children in terms of their education and to give their family a better life. A lot of students nowadays are experiencing school life without the presence of their parents. The absence of one parent, especially both parents could be a main source of stress for adolescents. With a large number of overseas Filipino workers, it has increased concerns about their impact on left behind children, who are perceived to be most affected by the absence of their parents. On the other hand, it is also a relief to have the extended family looking after the children left behind. However, it cannot negate the fact that the children are longing for the love and care from their biological parents. Overseas Filipino Workers go overseas because of the benefit of having higher salary and several opportunities given in other countries than staying in the Philippines. The sacrifices of OFW parents just to provide a better life for their families earned them the title of the nation’s bagong bayani (Gavilan, 2016).

They neglect to realize that if ever they did it for their children’s advantages, there may be some disadvantages to their children as well. Their responsibility to their children cannot be paid with any material things. It is not enough that parents excelled only as good provider and yet they lack of proper guidance and counselling to their children (Maculada, 2018). According to the World Health Organization on June 2013, “a child is a person 19 years or younger unless national law defines a person to be an adult at an earlier age. However, in these guidelines when a person falls into the 10 to 19 age category they are referred to as an adolescent.” A child is not born with disciplines and values. In the course of their upbringing they inculcate these values from the environment they grow in. It is the sole duty of the parents to shape the personality of their child through proper guidance and nurturing strategies (Hazra and Mittal, 2019). A number of children these days experience the absence of fathers and mothers. And it is more likely to cause a huge impact on the mental and emotional well-being of the children (Jeshrian, 2010). According to the website of the Cleveland Clinic (2014) on their article entitled Social Development During the Teen Years, adolescence is the period of developmental transition between childhood and adulthood. It involves changes in personality, as well as in physical, intellectual and social development. During this time of change, teens are faced with many issues and decisions. Social development refers to the process by which a child learns to interact with others around them. The attitude of the students toward their parents and toward others may change because of the absence of their parents which is 2

expected to be always by their side. This struggle begins during early adolescence (ages 12-14 years). They felt awkward when talking to their OFW parents, sharing those stories and telling them how they feel (Arguillas and Williams, 2019). Behavioural Development modifies the way we interact with our environment. As children become teenagers, their brains grow and change. These changes affect their thinking and behaviour. The combination of child’s unique brain and environment influences the way the child acts, thinks and feels (Brereton, 2017). For young children, they see this as a form of abandonment and not seeing the other side of the picture of their parents while adolescents may either be receptive or resentful. However, stressful life events such as the separation from a parent are known to have a severe impact on the socio-behavioural development of children (Smeekens, 2012). This study focuses on the children that are left behind by their parents to work overseas and the effects on their socio-behavioural development due to the absence of one or both parents. The respondents of the study are grouped according to their profile in terms of Age, Gender, Grade Level and Parent(s) working Abroad to assess the significant relationship between the effects of having OFW Parents on Socio-Behavioral Development among Grade 7 and 8 Junior High School students in Bauan Technical High School.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK In order to attain the objectives of the study, a conceptual paradigm was developed and presented in Figure 1. This paradigm summarizes the processes or steps to take in place in order to come up with the proposed output.

Figure 1.0 Conceptual Framework and Research Paradigm for the Effects of having OFW Parents on Socio - Behavioral Development of Grade 7 and 8 Junior High School Students in Bauan Technical High School The first box consists of the profile of the respondents such as the Age, Gender, Grade Level and Parent(s) working Abroad which served as the input and the effects of having OFW parents on socio - behavioral development of 4

grade 7 and 8 Junior High School students in Bauan Technical High School in terms of Parental Presence, Challenges faced, Issues on Socio-Behavioural Aspect and Insights on how should the parents treat their children. The second box which is the process indicates the method used by the Researchers to gather all the needed data and information through Survey Questionnaires and Statistical Treatment and Analysis of Data. The third box is the output of the study which covered the proposed activity which is the seminar on the various Coping Mechanisms of OFW children with sharing of experiences of those children left-behind for them to be aware on different coping mechanisms on dealing with that kind of situation. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK This study is based on the Attachment Theory of a British psychiatrist John Bowlby and advanced by Mary Ainsworth (2015). This theory was chosen to inform this study due to its consistent analytical emphasis on the innate desire of every offspring to develop a long-term relationship with at least one primary caregiver for emotional development to occur. The attachment theory explains how much the parent relationship with the child influences the child’s development. The formation of an emotional attachment to a permanent caregiver attributes to the positive formation of later mental and emotional development. Events that interfere with attachment such as sudden separation from familiar people or the significant inability of...
