Description

DIY Firewood Rack Thanks for downloading the DIY PETE DIY Firewood Rack Plans. O  ver the holidays I wanted to do a project with my Dad so we came up with an idea and got to it. During the winter we burn a lot of wood to keep the fireplace going and wanted a way to help store the wood and dry it out. We drew up a few ideas and started building. The complete Youtube video and project tutorial photos to go along with these plans can be found at http://www.diypete.com/FirewoodRack - I invite you to make changes to the plans as you find necessary to best fit your needs. Good luck with the project and have fun building it! Please post project photos on the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/DIYPROJECTSWITHPETE or elsewhere tagged with #  DIYPETE Cheers – DIY PETE

Wood QTY: 10 5 – 2×4 x 8 foot long boards QTY: 4 – 2×6 x 8 foot long boards QTY: 16 14- 1×6 x 6 foot long cedar pickets

Please Note *The dimensions on the listed boards are actually sold at ½” less 2”x4” boards are actually 1 ½”x3 ½” 2”x6” boards are actually 1 ½”x5 ½” 1”x6” pickets are actually ½”x5 ⅜”

Cut List Base QTY: 3 - 2x6 boards at 61” long QTY: 2 - 2x6 boards at 21” long Posts QTY: 4 - 2x4 boards at 69” long QTY: 4 - 2x4 boards at 59” long Base Supports QTY: 2 - 2x6 boards at 21” long QTY: 1 - 2x6 board at 69” long QTY: 1 - 2x4 board at 69” long QTY: 1 - 2x4 board at 59” long Roof Supports QTY: 2 - 2x4 boards at 28 ¾” long, then cut 22.6 angle on ends Up to 30" (check your specific measurements)

QTY: 2 - 2x4 boards at 25” long, then cut 22.6 angle on ends Roof and Siding Pickets QTY: 10 - Cedar Pickets at 24 ¾” long QTY: 5 - Cedar Pickets at 67 ¾” long QTY: 6 - Cedar Pickets at 72” long

Step 1 – Make All of Your Cuts Cut each piece to size on your miter saw. For all cuts’ lengths and widths, refer to the cut list above. If you don’t have a miter saw you can find one here. 4 http://www.diypete.com/FirewoodRack

Step 2 - Assemble the Base The base is made of the 2x6 boards cut to 61” long (3 boards) and the 21” long (2 boards). You can use a K  reg Jig and 2 1/2 inch Kreg screws to connect the 2×6 boards using pocket holes. Or the other method is to use 3 inch screws and wood glue. The four posts are made out of the 2x4 boards cut to 69” tall (4 boards) and the 59” tall (4 boards). Assemble the four posts with pocket holes and Kreg screws. Then we’ll want to connect each 2×6 to a 2×4 post using 3 inch screws. You could use a Kreg jig and 2 1/2 inch Kreg screws if you prefer. Attach the 4 corner posts and vertical 2×4 to the 2×6 base. We’ll then add stretchers between the posts at the height of the 59” back posts. Using the 21” long 2x6 board pieces (2) we cut, add a 2×6 on the left and right sides to strengthen the structure. Screw these in through the posts using 3 inch wood screws.

Step 3 - Assemble Roof Supports To completely finish off the base, we’ll need to add front and back stretchers and the roof supports. Use 3 inch screws and wood glue to screw the 2x6 board cut to 69” long. It should overhang past the posts equally on either side. Then attach a similar 2x4 board to the back. Refer to the photos below. Cut and add 4 boards to support the roof. Two of the 2×4 boards will go on the ends and two will be placed in-between. These boards angles will be 22.6 degrees on the ends. Double check your length after assembling the base. Make sure they are all level and flush to the ends and tops.

Step 4 - Attach Roof Pickets Here is a look at the cedar picket roof. We used 1 1/4 inch exterior grade wood screws to attach them to each of the four angled 2×4 boards that support the roof.

Step 5 - Attach Siding Pickets Add cedar pickets for the siding. We attached the pickets using 1 1/4 inch wood screws. We used 5 pickets on the back side. Then cut shorter pickets for the sides. Use 5 boards as well so the siding is the same height on all three sides (comes to 26 ⅞”).

Step 6 - Chop Some Wood Job well done! Admire your work and then move it into place. Start chopping some wood and throwing some logs on your new rack. Warm up your home and enjoy the ambiance of your wood fireplace and the convenience of your firewood storage rack!
