Abstract In this paper we will be looking at the differences between the certification processes, the cost of the certification and what you will receive with each of them, as well as the quality of training the participants will receive when taking the Canfitpro Fitness Instructor Specialists course and the TRX Group Training Course. I found that the two certification processes are very similar, both offering an in-class lesson to learn and understand the material, and have the opportunity to be critiqued by a certified professional. The slight difference between the two courses processes is the final assessment. The Canfitpro certification requires a practical and written exam, whereas the TRX course only requires course completion. The TRX Group training certification cost significantly less but does not certify the trainer to the same extent as the Canfitpro certification. The Canfitpro Fitness Instructor Specialist certification requires a Canfitpro membership which allows trainees to receive several discounts and special offers for being a member with them. The Fitness Instructor Specialist certification includes a one-year membership with Canfitpro. In my opinion, the two courses deliver crucial information that gives participants all of the correct knowledge to successfully lead a safe and effective class following their course completion. Each of the certification processes is accreditable in my opinion and abides by my health and fitness values and how I believe one should become certified in the fitness field, although I do think that each fitness certification course should require a final exam to ensure participants retained all knowledge from the course.

Fitness Certification Comparison The Canfitpro Instructor Specialists (FIS) certification is a certification you can receive through the company Canfitpro. With this certification, you are able to successfully lead a safe and effective group exercise class using the tools and skills learned in this course. The TRX Group Training course enables you to utilize the TRX suspension cables to create a full body work out for a group exercise class with varying fitness levels.

Certification Processes. To become a Canfitpro Instructor Specialists you first must register for a live class held in your area. After registering participants will need to fill out a standard consent form and a PARQ, as well as have updated CPR. Once all forms are completed the participant will receive their instructor manual, and then the class can begin. The Fitness Instructor Specialist course is a 25hour course that is said to “increase your knowledge and confidence level to lead a group fitness class to music.” (Canfitpro, 2019) The FIS class includes information on basic training principles, fitness theory, human anatomy and kinesiology, components of a fitness class, musicality, leadership and motivation skills, as well as how to teach classes for special populations and injuries. After completing the course, Canfitpro recommends allowing three weeks for studying and preparation before attempting the final written exam and practical evaluation. The final exam consists of multiple-choice questions, as well as short answer theory questions. The practical evaluation is a fitness class demonstration done by the participant to show the PRO TRAINER that they understand the material and can put it together to host a safe and effective class for their future students. (Canfitpro, 2019)

To become a TRX Group Trainer you take the TRX Group Training Course. It is strongly recommended that participants take the TRX suspension training course as a prerequisite. The TRX Group Training Course is an 8- hour hands-on training course, prior to the course each participant will receive a link to a digital copy of the training manual or can purchase a hard copy of the manual, as well they will receive a pre-read document to be read before the course. Following completion of the TRX Group Training Course, instructors will be able to apply TRX coaching knowledge to deliver group suspension training workouts, able to coach multiple individuals at a time, create a fun and personalized training experience for all fitness levels, and lead two different styles of suspension workouts; A strength style workout, and a high intensity interval workout. (Fitness Anywhere LLC, 2018) The TRX Group Training Course does not include a final exam or formal practical evaluation, but is mandatory that you complete the full 8- hour course to receive certification.

Course Fees and Recertifications The Canfitpro FIS course cost a total of $642.00 at the regular member rate, that includes a one-year Canfitpro professional membership, in-class course, course manual, study guide, and exam. If you already have a Canfitpro membership your FIS course will only cost $544.00 You can also purchase a membership for a small fee and receive all of the Canfitpro membership perks including discounted apparel, access to music and workout plans, travel vouchers, online support, and trainer’s insurance. Early bird rates are available for members and non-members if the participant registers online more than three weeks before the scheduled start date of the event. To keep your certifications, you will need to have a valid yearly membership with

Canfitpro, four hours of Canfitpro Education Credits, as well as Standard First Aid, CPR& AED training. (Canfitpro, 2019) The TRX Group Training Course is $295.00 that includes a digital copy of the group training course manual. Participants have the options to purchase a hard copy of the manual for $65.00. Participants will be able to purchase TRX products at a special discounted price following the course. There is no recertification for the TRX Group Training Course. (Fitness Anywhere LLC, 2018)

Do These Courses Ensure Safe and Effective Class Delivery? Both of the courses are live classes with trained professionals to ensure participants are receiving high-quality material, and are being supervised and corrected during each aspect of the course. The Canfitpro Fitness Instructor Specialist certification does not require participants to attend the course but does require a practical and written exam to receive certification.

The TRX Group Training certification does not require a practical or written exam but does require participants to take the course to receive certification.

Each of the certifications and their processes requires the participants to learn or know the material and class expectations, thus ensuring they deliver a safe class for their students. Although the procedures are slightly different for each certification, I believe both the Canfitpro and the TRX certification will adequately prepare participants to lead a safe fitness class of their own.

Are the Certification Processes In-line with My Values? In my opinion, because the Canfitpro course requires you to have enough knowledge about the certification requirements, as well as be able to demonstrate the material learned in a practical evaluation this course does align with my health and wellness values. This course includes many key points I look for when researching a credible training course, including a final exam to ensure information retention, accreditations ensuring the certification is widely recognized, and a live class with a trained professional assisting and correcting participants.

The TRX Group Fitness Course also includes many key features I deem important when taking a certification. Although the TRX course does not include a final exam to ensure participants have retained all crucial information learned in the course, I still would take the course or a class taught by an individual who has taken the course due to the completion of the course required for certification; taught by a certified TRX professional trainer.
