Title: Fitspiration and thinspiration: A comparison across three social networking sites

Source: Alberga et al. Journal of Eating Disorders (2018)

Purpose: Critically examined and compared the content of fitspiration and thinspiration on three social networking sites (SNS).

Subjects: Fitspiration and thinspiration posts from three photo-sharing SNS (instagram, Tumblr, and Twitter.

Dependent variable: The posts about #thinspiration and #fitspiration

Independent variable: none

Research design: In a short period of time, four days over two weeks. Posts were quasi-randomly collected across three social network sites ( Instagram, Tumblr, and Twitter). Image and associated text content were coded for variables related to weight and shape, muscularity, thin ideal, and eating.

Major Findings:

The study confirmed that fitspiration and thinspiration posts each emphasised appearance-related ideals, sexual suggestiveness (i.e., suggestive poses and revealing apparel), and restrictive eating. It had proven that fitspiration displayed more messages of guilt about body shape and weight than thinspiration. This attention on appearance in fitspiration content material is in particular concerning because exercise for look-related motives previously has been related to disordered eating, depressive signs and symptoms, and negative body image. The variables related to muscularity have been featured in fitspiration posts more regularly than in thinspiration posts. The examination had additionally shown that thinspiration posts promoted thinnes, explicit encouragement of weight loss, objectifying content material, and made references to consuming issues more frequently than fitspiration, similar to preceding findings. they'd also detected no systematic variations in fitspiration content, many of the three SNS, other than body positivity being found most effective on Tumblr.

Summary and Conclusions: This research aimed to conduct a content analysis of fitspiration and thinspiration posts on 3 popular SNS- Instagram, Tumblr, and Twitter- and to look at similarities and variations between fitspiration and thinspiration. Their secondary objective of this study was to discover possible differences in fitspiration and thinspiration posts among three SNS, as well as among primary hashtags used to discover content in posts. Their hypothesis was examined and it was discovered that fitspiration and thinspiration display many similarities, specifically a focal point on appearance, sexual suggestiveness, and restrictive eating.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

This report had been clearly written. The abstract was broken to four sections as well, Background, Methods, Results and Conclusions. They had also written it in Plain english summary. This study clearly stated the hypothesis and tested the theory as well and found results. They did not clearly mention what type of experiment this was other than “content analysis”. The limitations were excellent and so was the conclusion. Overall, it was a good report....
