Fleabag-A Dysfunctional Story

When a show in the second season starts with a bloody nose Fleabag wipes the blood off her face after a fight with her brother-in-law and tells the audience that the show is a “ Love Story”. Fleabag is the main character of the show played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge who is also the producer, writer, and creator of the show. The show follows Fleabag and her adventures through life with her family, love, and friendships in a span of two seasons and twelve episodes. In season one of the show, Fleabag was portrayed as a sex-crazed monster while at the same time looking for love and dealing with her best friend committing suicide. Season two shows Fleabag after one year away from her family as a changed woman trying to settle down and her business thriving while her dad and godmother announces that they are getting married and the hot priest will officiate the wedding who turns into a love interest for Fleabag later on in the season. Fleabag makes us question social norms in our lives by comparing her friendship, family, and relationships in her life. Fleabag makes us question social norms by how friendship in her life is very complicated. Meaning in season one of the show it was shown that Fleabag’s best friend Boo committed suicide because her boyfriend at the time cheated on her. Boo planned to get a little injury by going into the bike lane on the road and getting hit but bikes are pretty fast so when she got hit with a bike she flew to the street with moving cars and got run over. The show shows that Fleabag doesn't have any friends because of her past friend who dies and she can't move on from her death. The closest person Fleabag has to a friend is her sister Claire who secretly loves her

2

but won't show her that side of her personality. The second closest Fleabag has a friend in her life is secretly the bank manager from season one. In season one the bank manager was in the first episode for Fleabag asking a loan and it didn't end well with him calling her a name later on in the season Fleabag and Claire went to a retreat a gift from their father and there was a men therapy one next door yelling at female dolls to control their anger it was called To Be a Better Man. They meet and it doesn't say in the show but they become friends from there and at the finale of season one when Claire and Fleabag get into an argument over Martin, Claires now ex-husband, Fleabag thinks about killing herself but the bank manager stops her. In the same episode, he gives Fleabag another chance at applying for a loan and he said he will help save her cafe. In season two the bank manager is there for only one episode to tell Fleabag he's leaving the bank and gives her a gift that was a hamster but kept calling it a guinea pig which Fleabag already had in the cafe as to remember her best friend Boo. Another way Fleabag makes us question social norms in life is by her dysfunctional family. Fleabag’s family consists of her dad, godmother, her sister Claire, her brother-in-law Martin, and her nephew who she calls weird Jake. Fleabag’s mother died and her godmother was a student for her mother started dating her dad right after their mother passed away. The godmother dislikes Fleabag openly in season one when Fleabag steals a statue, which later in season two finale the statue was her mother naked the whole time, then in the sexhibition which her godmother created on the love she had throughout her life she made Fleabag a server and at the same time, she was hitting on her then-boyfriend arsehole guy. Martin is her brother in law and he hates her also like her godmother because in the show when something bad happened between him and Clarie he blames Fleabag. In season one there was an episode on Claire's birthday where

3

a drunk Martin kissed Fleabag and she tried to tell Claire but she won't accept that he would do that to her and blamed Fleabag which later she said she knew it was him. Martin in season two was shown real aggressive toward Fleabag after she punched him in the face and he retaliates by suing her. Fleabag’s father in season one is very awkward around him especially when they are alone together in a room, which Fleabag loves because he acts strange around her at those times. At the finale of season two Fleabag has a one on one moment with her dad and was scared and thinking he was making a mistake marrying the godmother which Fleabag convinced him that it's okay. Claire is the only person in the show and her life is there for her and Fleabag is there also when in need. Claire is like a friend for Fleabag even though she is her sister and made clear many times in season two that they are sisters, not friends they're supposed to hate each other. The final way Fleabag makes us question social norms in life is by the relationships she has throughout the show. In season one she has many randoms hookups for example in the first episode of the show right away shes having sex with a man named Arsehole guy. She had two boyfriends in the span of season one the first one was an emotional man named Harry who the whole family loved and the reason they broke up was that she always masturbated when they promised not to. Harry always came back to Fleabag and she knew that by every time they would break up he would clean the house and leave a little dinosaur in the house and when he would come to get it they would get back together. However in the season when they meet in the sexhibition Fleabag finds out that Harry has a new girlfriend who is his co-worker and in season two he has a baby with the same woman. In season two Fleabag meets the “Hot Priest” who in the beginning feels nothing for him but after a while, she develops feelings for him. The priest also develops feelings for her in the finale both Fleabag and the priest were at the bus stop and

4

confess their love for each other. Both of them say they love each other but the priest replies,” it’ll pass” meaning that the priest chose faith in God rather than love. In conclusion, Fleabag makes us question social norms in life by learning every mistake she made and make sure we won't do the same thing and just live life is the message of the show. Don't let anything stop you from doing anything like the sign in the final episode in the finale after the priest leaves for good meaning life in Bulgarian.
