Flint Water Crisis Documentary Write Up...

Description

Flint Water Crisis Documentary Write Up The Flint Water Crisis was a devastating issue where innocent lives were lost because of the negligence of people in charge of the safekeeping of the city. This topic is important because it shows us how important it is to question those in authority and to take action when the government is not able to protect our families. After watching the documentary, I realized how important it was for us to trust ourselves and not believe in everything the people in power tell us. It is up to us to fight for our basic rights. There were many important points covered in the documentary. The water source of the city was changed to Flint during the time the pipes were being built from a better water source. Flint water, however, was not tested before it was declared that it could be used as drinking water by the city. The water, in fact, was the breeding grounds for legionella bacteria which caused severe pneumonia to those who drank or bathed in the water. The doctors knew exactly why there were so many pneumonia cases in the city and contacted many government officials in order to alert them that the Flint water might be contaminated. However, the government officials either ignored the messages or just assumed there was nothing wrong with their cheap arrangement. It is scary to see how unresponsive the government was when it came to the issues of the lowincome population. Seeing that the people in charge of the issue received no punishment and were completely off the hook is truly sad. One quote from the documentary that really stood out to me was “Justice postponed is justice forgotten”. It was almost as though the documentary for suggesting that people of Flint will never truly receive the justice they deserve. We, as humans, rely so much on water every day and take it for granted. To think that the government would let bacteria infested water fill our pipes truly feels horrific. My trust in the government really went down after that. The government should take responsibility for all the lives that were lost during the Flint Water Crisis and should immediately take action to improve the water quality of Flint. However, the documentary ended with the Flint water crisis only getting worse due to COVID. As much as we would like to be hopeful that the situation would get better eventually, the documentary showed us that there is still no improvement made so far. I think everyone should watch this documentary because not many people know about the Flint water crisis. And for those who did hear about it, like me, might not know that this is an ongoing issue. Due to the lack of media coverage, I assumed that the issue was resolved. However, I did not know that the issue became worse with time and it’s at the worst now....
