Description of Procedure Antiembolic Stockings are used to promote venous return. They cause external pressure on the muscles of the lower extremities to promote blood return to the heart.
Indications Thrombophlebitis Edema Deep vein thrombosis Phlebitis Varicose veins
Outcomes/Evaluation Patient is relieved of condition or the condition is better managed because of the use of the antiembolic stockings. Patient avoids emboli.
Potential Complications Thrombophlebitis Pulmonary embolism
CONSIDERATIONS
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) PrePerform hand hygiene Assess skin, circulation, and presence of edema in legs Measure calf/thigh circumference and length of leg to help in selection of length of stocking IntraPut on stocking and make sure remainder of the stocking goes over the heel and up the leg. Smooth any creases or wrinkles. PostRemove stockings every 8 hours to assess for redness, tenderness
Client Education Instruct the patient to report discomfort and instruct patient how the stockings are used and to not remove them. Instruct patient to keep the stockings clean and dry.
Nursing Interventions Notify the physician Lift legs up in bed to promote venous return Avoid pressure at the site of inflammation Anticipate the use of anticoagulants for the pt Prepare to give thrombolytics or anticoags Place patient in high fowlers; use pulse ox Administer oxygen to pt Prepare to obtain blood gas reading Monitor vital signs frequently
