Description

Food Chains film analysis 1. How were the farmworkers exploited and what were some of the problems they faced? -

Their living situation was terrible, several families live in one house because the rent is extremely expensive, also their pay wages is unacceptable, for an 18 hours shift they get paid $42 dollars.

2. Which industry was highlighted in the film? Which other industries in the world also face similar problems? -

Some of the industries mentioned in the film were the supermarket and farms. Also the pepino and chili industries. ( cucumber)

3. What did the farmworkers do to try and solve the problem? From whom did they get their inspiration? -

-

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) which was created to stablish a fair environment for the farms and also a better pay wage, this organization obtained a contract for the farmers which was base of get paid an extra penny for every pound of tomatoes sold The farmers tried to get in communication with Publix the biggest organization of tomatoes in America, but it has been impossible for them to get in touch with them. Lastly they stand and march in front of the HQ of Publix demanding a better pay.

4. Farmworkers are among the lowest paid workers in America. How does this make you feel/what do you think about this? - First of all it is hard for me to understand how a rich and huge country like the United Sates allow any of its workers to live this type of horrible situations on a daily basis. - I feel terrible knowing that millions of people out there that live in the same country that I am living in does not have the same opportunities that I am having just because they may not speak the language or their status is undocumented. 5. Do you think the extra penny per pound rule is fair? Why would someone be for/against this deal? -

About the extra penny I do not think it is fair but if at least these huge industries accepted this idea, it will be a better improvement for the workers. These industries do not want to accept the idea of the extra penny, because they have a monopoly that it is working fine for them, by threatening millions of workers.

6. Some call modern farm workers as “modern day slavery”. Do you think this is a fair statement? -

No, this is not a fair statement on the first place, but it is happening in the United States that these workers are treating like slaves. Unfortunately these workers do not have enough support to change the unfairness situation.

7. When you are shopping for food after seeing this film, will you look for companies that take better care of farmworkers? Even if the food may be more expensive? -

Yes I will definitely start investigating my local’s supermarkets from now on, I did not know this unfair situation was happening to the workers, and living in such a horrible environment....
