Bienvenue ! FREN 101 will be taught based on inclusive pedagogy which means that every person matters. We acknowledge that we all vary, so the course content is designed to address this diversity of learning profiles (activities, assessment, etc.). If you need special accommodations, I will do my best to make it happen. The key is to communicate your needs to me. An easy way is by email and by office hours. Course overview and format: The course content follows the Common European Framework for Languages. FREN 101 is the equivalent of the first step of the Basic level (A.1.1.) in the common references’ levels (from A1 to C2). Be aware it is a language class so active participation is required. Welcome to the beginning of your journey into French language and culture! As this is a language course, our sessions are a fluid mix of—to translate other academic areas’ categories—lectures, discussion, and workshops. Class sessions are mostly conducted in French, with English as needed for explanation. 1

Classes are at the scheduled time and are for live active interactive practice with student peers, guided by your instructor. In registering for this course, please make sure that its scheduled time fits with your schedule and is compatible with your time zone and other practicalities of everyday life. FREN 101 offers a number of sections at different times of day. CLASS TIME

CLASS LOCATION

While there is some flexibility in this online course, you are expected to make yourself available to meet virtually on the following dates and times:

• All the resources (quizzes, tests, lectures, answer keys, pdf, group discussions, group work…) will be on: UBC CANVAS Site for FRENCH 101 Section 111. • Synchronous classes will be given on Zoom (check emails or Class of the day schedule on Canvas) Meeting ID: 691 5537 6940 Passcode: 892649

• •

Tuesdays and Thursdays for synchronous classes Some Thursdays for group/project work and workshops (synchronous and asynchronous)

If you find it impossible to attend every class, because of your time zone or other scheduling issues, you’re invited to register in a class that better fits your schedule. Reach out to your instructor asap. If you’re on a different time zone: Check here Þ As you will see, an important part of the success of the course (for the instructor and the students) will be on us as individuals, how we succeed in all creating an online community, in being part of this community (our capacity to stay on task, help others, participate, work in pairs and groups)… Active participation is fundamental: therefore, you will be required to BE in class (not be connected but do something else), answer questions, volunteer to read, be active in breakout rooms… We would also like to ask you to turn your camera on as much as possible (especially during group discussions). After that, it’s up to you but it’s still nicer that starring at a black box J (it is mandatory though for tests). Please contact your instructor when it feels necessary. This course is eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading. To determine whether you can take this course for Credit/D/Fail grading, visit the Credit/D/Fail website. You must register in the course before you can select the Credit/D/Fail grading option. Learning Objectives: The Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies (FHIS) offers a series of eight courses designed to build students’ skills progressively in the four basic communicative functions of listening, reading, speaking, and writing. FREN 101 is the first of a pair of beginners’ courses—101 and 102— aligned with level A1 objectives of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR/DELF): basic vocabulary, the rudiments of grammar, and familiarization with cultures of the French-speaking world. FREN 101 introduces the French language and Francophone cultures, opening up their understanding in a worldwide context. With an approach that is communicative and collaborative, and inductive and interactive, the course develops your comprehension and the mobilization of knowledge translated into applied practice.

By the end of the course, you should be able to understand simple communication and to communicate simply about familiar and frequently-encountered topics such as personal information, work, everyday life, identity, tastes, activities, geography, and local environment. Full details of objectives and outcomes will be on your Canvas course site. Prerequisites: This course is designed for students who have never learned any French before. It assumes no prior knowledge of French. If you are unsure if this is the appropriate level of French course for you—for example if you have already learned some French—please consult UBC FHIS Advising . Corequisites: This course must not be taken at the same time as other FREN courses. It is not available to students with the prerequisite for FREN 102.

Also Outside class and not graded Due: (term-long) (0%) As full-time academic work, a UBC undergraduate full course load should mean 40 hours per week. Expect to work for each course on average 8 hours per week. For FREN 101, that means 3 scheduled class hours plus around 5 hours per week: preparation before each class, practice after, and 1-2 days off (ex. weekend). Language learning is like music, dance, martial arts, and sports in that it requires regular practice and rest for solid deep learning. It is better to do some French 5-6 days per week than to try to cram everything into one giant session at the end of the week or before an exam. FREN 101 has workbook practice exercises (Cahier) and optional extra online exercises to provide you with this practice. It’s very helpful for learning and wellbeing to work together with peer colleagues from our class, in pairs or small study groups.

GRADING BREAKDOWN In-class participation & Community Engagement = 15% Assignments = 15% of grade Projects = 20 % Module quizzes + final examination = 50% of grade Total = 100% Details and evaluation criteria (for example rubrics for specific assignments) will be on Canvas.

SUPPORT The next parts of our syllabus—“SUPPORT” and “POLICIES”—are long and complicated and can be confusing. It’s not just you: this can confuse faculty and staff too. There’s a lot of information here. Some of it might change during our three months together: there might be updates from the Faculty of Arts and UBC. Please feel free to email the course coordinator if you have any questions. In general, about anything in our course and at UBC: if in doubt, if you have any questions or worries about anything, please ask! This course, your class, your instructor, and your coordinators are a safe space and here to help. If we don't know an answer—we're human—we'll try to figure it out together and we’ll help you to find someone who does know and can make things happen. This is a community of care. FHIS Learning Centre: The FHIS Learning Centre is a free service available for students of all levels and languages of the FHIS curriculum (French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish). The Centre offers student-centered conversation practice, tutoring (i.e. grammar and vocabulary questions), and help with the continued development of core skills (i.e. speaking, listening, reading, and writing) necessary for students’ success in acquiring and becoming proficient in the subjects that we teach in the FHIS Depart...
