Gartner Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2019: Privacy and Ethics The digital world is constantly changing. Artificial intelligence by 2024, according to Gartner (2018), will dive into every physical asset, software, and service to create a new era of automation. As artificial intelligence opens a new future in digital business, privacy and ethics come out as a major issue during this transformation. Gartner gives an example of a fitness company that came up with a tracking system to make sure that their clients were training. Soldiers used the same tracking system, and unfortunately, information about the soldiers was published on the internet. Beyond artificial intelligence, privacy sits in front of every online activity. Scandals, leaks, and data breaches have eroded confidence in any information system. In my own opinion, the issue of privacy in the tracking system could have been avoided in two ways. The first way is to seek informed consent from the soldiers before using the tracking. Again, good data hygiene practice ensures that only data sets needed to create AI are collected and kept. In this perspective, the data set used to create fitness AI should not have been used to create the AI used for the soldiers. This helps assign resources and data governance for AI purposes. Companies today take privacy issues very seriously, considering that they run a high risk if breached. When creating AI, companies take data control while enhancing the online experience. One industrial application is the analysis of consumer data or a focus on health data. Infodemiology collects a wide variety of public data anonymously held to answer health questions across populations. Therefore, health facilities follow HIPAA federal regulations, which govern how health information should be held or released (Gostin, Levit, & Nass, 2009). The regulations maintain ‘good intent’ in all public health outcomes. The basic goal of privacy protection in the health sector is to allow individuals to control what others know about them.
