Summary

Monologue (tom buncan) based on Gatsby novel ...

Description

Jay Gatsby- The monologue occurs just before the lunch at the Buchanan’s, where Daisy will tell Tom that she never loved him.

Gatsby Monologue Gatsby wipes the sweat off his forehead as he enters the room.

What a steaming hot day!

Gatsby crosses his leg while sitting in a grand couch.

Today is the day, old sport. Today is the day. Daisy is ready. Ready to tell Tom that she never loved him, that she always loved me. I can finally go back to the start and recapture the past. The moment I met Daisy, I committed myself to her and poured my endless love into our relationship.

Gatsby admires a vase of flowers, while delicately stroking it.

Daisy…as sweet as the flower itself, my darling Daisy. When I think about Daisy, I think about her warm, innocent smile, and her low, thrilling voice. That excites every sense in my body. It reminds me of the beautiful moment our lips touched, and she blossomed for me like a flower.

When I first laid my eyes on Daisy, five years ago, she was gorgeous in her beautiful white dress. She was the first nice girl; I had ever known. As our courtship went on, I didn’t realise just how extraordinary a nice girl could be. The moment I kissed her curious and lovely mouth, I knew I had wedded all my hopes and dreams to her. We were in love. But after the war, I had lost her… to Tom Buchanan.

Gatsby moves from the couch.

I dedicated myself, after Daisy’s marriage to Tom to somehow win her back. You see, Daisy was forced-she had no option but to marry him.

But she never loved him, you see, she had always loved me. She only married Tom because I was poor and she was tired of waiting, and it was a terrible, terrible mistake. But in her heart, she never loved anyone, except me.

Gatsby takes a sip of his whiskey.

I dedicated my whole self to Daisy, altering myself to fit in her world, to belong. I was a poor farm boy from North Dakota, and now I have millions. I built my wealth through a chain of drug stores, establishing a respectable name for myself. It was all for Daisy, the house, the parties, everything.

Gatsby moves towards the window and points towards Daisy’s house.

I built this mansion right across the bay from Daisy’s house, throwing extravagant parties. Hoping that Daisy would wander in, so I could rekindle our love.

Gatsby moves across the room.

I mean, what has Tom ever done for Daisy? He is an arrogant bully, who yearns power, not love. Never providing my Daisy with the one thing she needs so desperately, love. Once she tells Tom that she never loved him, their relationship will be over forever, and we can finally be together.

Gatsby’s voice begins to rise in concern.

But if Tom tries to bother Daisy about her decision, about us. If he tries any brutality on her what’s so ever-

Gatsby suddenly knocks a clock off the table. Gatsby wipes the sweat off his face and adjusts his suit.

I don’t trust him, old sport. I don’t trust him.

Tom causes such pain for Daisy, through his affairs, she is a mere object to him. But Daisy doesn’t have to worry anymore, because I am going to take care of her. My darling Daisy is my green light, what I hoped to achieve, and now she is within my reach. I am going to fix everything just the way it used to be. Daisy is ready to tell Tom that she never loved him, and all of this, all this pain from the past will be wiped out forever.

Holding his drink, Gatsby smiles.

To my darling Daisy, my green light.

Gatsby drinks his whiskey. He then notices the time.

Oh wow! It’s almost 12 O’clock, I better go.

Gatsby walks out....
