Gay science: Nietzche

124 From what I understand, in this section, Nietzsche is speaking about starting a new beginning. He does this by saying that they are on a ship and they broke the bridge behind them (which represents there is no going back). He also says, “Beside thee is the ocean; it is true it does not always roar, and sometimes it spreads out like silk and gold and a gentle reverie.” This means that though the future might be scary and unpredictable, it is beautiful and full of wonder. 125 This section speaks of the death of god. The death of god is as follows: values used to be justified by god, now based on reason, rationality, and science. This leads to the following mentality: science is value neutral thus can’t create value (nihilism). Nihilism is the belief that traditional morals, ideas, beliefs, etc., have no worth or value. Nihilism leads to herd mentality because most people do not understand what they are doing, just doing it because everyone is doing it. 154 In this passage, he compares living life to a drunk night; stumbling and falling everywhere. Then he says that we should be careful because we are made of glass. From this I understand that life is fragile, and that though it may be hard, we have to appreciate it and live carefully. 289 In this passage, he speaks of how living life using philosophy can benefit us. He says that,” it makes him independent of praise and blame, self-sufficient, rich and generous in the bestowal of happiness and kindness; how it unceasingly transforms the evil to the good, brings all the energies to bloom and maturity, and altogether hinders the growth of the greater and lesser weeds of chagrin and discontent: one at last cries out importunately: Oh, that many such new suns were created!” 340 In this passage, he talks about the death of Socrates and how he admires him (maybe like a role model). What I found interesting is that he says “I admire the courage and wisdom of Socrates in all that he did, said and did not say.” This intrigues me because it shows that Socrates knew when and when not to talk. He later says maybe he talked when he wasn’t supposed to, that is why he died. 341 This passage speaks of external recurrence. External recurrence is; time is a circle and everything repeats itself. this helps you create your own values. framework for making decisions. He does this by asking us what we would do if a demon came and told us that we lived our life before. This is kind of like the theory of recollection (all knowledge is known from previous experience (eternal soul). His belief is that we already know everything and have known it since we were born, we simply recollect these facts from memory when we re-learn them)....
