History of Tuguegarao story retold by Karissa Rose A. Manalo, BSPharma-1A

Tuguegarao City, long before it has become the premiere city it is today, traces its history on a small mission-pueblo founded by Dominican Fr. Jacinto Pardo on May 9, 1604. [1] With it's ancient name Tubigarao, located in a 1752 french map as well as earlier maps made by spaniards in 1591[2]; It contradicted the local factoid that the name came from "tuggi gari yaw"; a phrase that became a local legend as people often recount how the city was razed to the ground, gutted by fire to make a way for cultivation purposes. As how the elderly liked to phrase it: like a beautiful phoenix that rose from its ashes. The ancient name suggests that the mission-pueblo was named after the river's swift current, considering the geographical location, since the pueblo was almost encapsulated by the Cagayan River in the western and southern side, and the Pinacanauan River, a tributary of Cagayan River in the eastern part. [3] With the abundance of source water, agriculture boomed as well as the pueblo's economy. Unfortunately, improved economy doesn't equate to better treatment of slaves/citizens, taxes became higher and harder to pay, which flared resentments that later caused an uprising and killed the assigned encomendero in the year 1605. [1] Tuguegarao got its first parochial building constructed in the year 1604, a chapel that became the foundation of what is now the Ermita de Piedra de San Jacinto (Stone Chapel of Saint Hyacinth) dedicated to Saint Hyacinth, the patron saint of Tuguegarao. Yet another revolution rosed in the year 1761, lead by a man named Francisco Rivera, as he questioned the need for Spanish Curates since Tuguegaraoeños already have their own pope (such as himself), priest and bishop, Jesus Christ, Holy Ghost and Trinity. His uprising was a lose-lose situation because his fellow Tuguegarao believers got tired of his irreligious and despotic rule which deprived citizens and dependents of the church. [4] Fast forward to year 1839, Tuguegarao, with its notable socio-economic progress, became the capital of Cagayan province when the provincial seat of power was relocated from Lal-lo. [1] The decline of its neighboring town, paved way for the transformation of Tuguegarao from a small innsignificant mission-peubllo to a first class municipality. Tuguegarao also played a big role during World War II, as the General Headquarters of the Philippine Commonwealth Army, Philippine Constabulary and the USAFIP-NL units was actived on 1942 to 1946 and stationed in this town. Many measures were done from bombing the airfiled to attacking guerilla forces, and the hardwork payoff as the town was officially liberated on June 25, 1945. [1] Years progressed after Tuguegarao was declared as the capital and seat of regional government of Cagayan Valley, the expansion of urban land became prominent. And by 1981, about 49 barangays were established. [1] With the growing population, facilities were built and the positive developments turned...
