Description

IS THE ‘GHANA BEYOND AID’ REALISTIC OR A MERE RHETORIC?

The idea of creating a Ghana beyond aid is a very much laudable one, especially looking at the time and situations surrounding its conception. By this initiative, the president made clear his intentions of transforming Ghana into an aid-free country. He also hopes to extend this initiative unto the continental front; spearheading an aid-free Africa. This statement was first made in an official and open door conversation with the French president. This statement continued down in H.E.1 Akuffo Addo similar statements on similar platform. The following are some of the key characteristics of the agenda as captured by the president in his statements. The GBA2 agenda is an agenda targeted at reducing aid inflow to Ghana and other African states rather than ending it. It is true that no country can survive completely devoid of aid, however, foreign aid has continually contributed to the underdevelopment fate of Africa. And this, H.E Akuffo by his GBA agenda seek to annihilate. The GBA agenda is an African agenda to change the west’s view about Africa and Africans. On the platform of conception of the idea, statistics was consulted to consolidate the fact that Africa was way matured to keep reliance on aid policies of western nations. He asserted that, ‘Africa had all it needed to stand alone.’3 However, in building a Ghana beyond aid, the nation’s economy must have achieved a level of significance in the sub-region and on the continental stage. Currently, the nation’s economy is still under IMF4 control. The IMF at present still regulates fiscal policy decisions of the country. With this basic lack, economic independence as appraised by the president is still a message to ponder. The level of significance to be attained would have to be characterized by a stabilized macroeconomy; where inflation is relatively under control. Also, an increase in support from government for private initiative is needed, as it would probably be most helpful in building a strong per-capita output capacity for the country’s economy. The president alongside his team, has however within the almost two years of their administrative period demonstrated the inability to control two of the aforementioned characteristics; and is known to have only created a support for private initiative by words, lacking action. From this rather brief analysis, it is clear that, the GBA agenda which of course is a realistic initiative as it has been realized by other continents and nations, but under the current state of affairs, this initiative is a mere rhetoric, made most probably to win political points. 1 His Excellency 2 Ghana Beyond Aid 3 http://youtu.be/hNH2zePgWc0 4 International Monetary Fund...
