Heather Holtrop HDFS 2322 Section 001 GICW 2 Compensatory Individual Paper Question 1 – What are two specific similarities in communication patterns for men and women?

As we discussed during lecture, nonverbal communication consists of basic elements and basic functions (Miller, p.144). The two specific similarities in communication patterns for men and women is the way they both utilize basic elements and basic functions in their interactions with their partners. Basic elements include things such as facial expressions and body movement. When men and women are interested in a potential partner or are with their current partner, you can usually understand their emotions and feelings by paying attention to their facial expressions and body movement. If they are interested in each other, they will most likely be smiling, laughing and have a lot of eye contact- this is true for both men and women. With regard to body movement, when partners are interested in each other or are comfortable together, they will be holding hands, touching, kissing and will have a small interpersonal distance because they want to be close to each other. In everyday situations, we can see how men and women both use these basic elements while with their partners. Just based on the physical appearance of two people interacting, you are able to understand a lot of information about their relationship. This is related to the basic functions of nonverbal communication. Basic functions are used to convey information between partners and to establish the nature of their relationship. The purpose of facial expressions and body movement is to express emotions and show your partner that you care. Doing these things allows you to communicate information to your partner and demonstrates the nature of your relationship just based on your nonverbal communication. This is another similarity between men and women because both use basic elements, such as body movement, to communicate their specific feelings towards their partner. This is also used to demonstrate to other people that there is a relationship between you and your partner. An example of basic functions, could be when couples are out at a bar together. If a man sees

another man looking at his girlfriend, then he might kiss her or hug her in order to demonstrate that they are together to the other man; this could also apply vice versa....
