Description

Go Ahead: Waste Your Time on the Internet 1. Goldsmith’s thesis is that people are not wasting time on the internet as many believe. People are still communicating through texts/calls and the internet is a source to connect with people with similar interests as you. Carr believes the internet is ruining humanity because of the disconnection from reality that it causes. Goldsmith argues it doesn’t cause disconnection and actually brings people together. 2. *People waste hours on the internet--people are not doing one thing while online. *Lost the ability to concentrate--”notice a great wealth of concentration” when people are on devices. *Internet has made us antisocial and lack communication skills--people are communicating with one another on their devices through texting, calls, and IM. Goldsmith uses contradictory language in his argument against the standard views. He also uses positive connotated words when expressing his views opposed to what standard views are. 3. Goldsmith’s evidence is based mainly on anecdotal evidence. He uses examples of his family and examples of what he sees in everyday life. Carr included both research and anecdotal evidence which balanced out. Personally I believe Goldsmith’s argument is more persuasive because his explanations are thought out and he explains the truth behind standard views. 4. The statement is basically saying internet critics want to go back to the times when people would be more face to face rather than face to device. The gated community refers to a closed off community that only talks to each other. The internet allows us to connect with people around the world but a gated community you’re confined to your own small society. Goldsmith is accusing critics of being confined to their views without looking at the other side of the argument. He is accusing them of wanting to stay within their little communities and go back to the time when the people in your community were all the people you knew....
