Marriage Customs Preservation of the Family Reputation

Marriages were arranged by the parents so that the young couple would be married even if they did not have much opportunity to get acquainted. Marriageable women are kept in relative seclusion to protect their value to their family.

One characteristic of the Tausug is preservation of the family reputation and will never commit an act of cowardice that will blemish on the family’s name. They believe that running away is shameful especially when other members of the family are involved.

Aside from Allah or Tuhan, the

RELATION Putli Isara’s dignity as a woman, especially one who’s to remain pure and who’s betrothed to someone was stained. Despite all her efforts to prevent that to happen, it was futile. That resulted for her and her husband to commit parang sabil in order to give justice to the sanctity of their religion, Islam.

Isara is betrothed to Abdullah. Her father, the Panglima asked for her to stay at home and wait for her fiancés return but she did not. With her guard down, she took a bath in a river and got touched by a stranger unwillingly and that severely ruined not only hers but her whole family’s reputation.

When Matagpis (Panglima’s wife) asked him that they should go and pick up their daughter’s corpse, he resisted and was firm on his decision not to go because her daughter disobeyed his counsel and that made Matagpis mad. The Pangliima’s attitude and actions were cowardly and bringing shame to their families. As a result, Matagpis went alone and tried to pick her daughter alone even though it was in vain.

In the story, it was mentioned how Matagpis saw her daughter riding on a horse going towards the heavens and same as to how her son saw her when she died. It was also mentioned briefly how Matagpis was compared as saytan (the devil) by the soldiers chasing her because of how unrealistically swift she was.

On their way to commit parang sabil, Isara said to Abdullah, “I will regard you as my Husband. Though we are not married on Earth, in death it shall be done.” meaning she believed that they’ll meet again in the afterlife and

EXPLANATION Marriage is ideally arranged by parents. First and second cousins are favoured spouses. A series of negotiations precedes marriage, concluding with an agreement on the amount of bride-wealth and other expenses to be paid by the boy's family.

Contacts between the sexes are restricted and marriageable women are kept in relative seclusion to protect their value to their family as political and economic assets.

Loyalty is an important trait among the Tausugs. They practice the ritual of blood compact to signify the depth of their loyalty to one another. They are fierce and dangerous but the moment one befriends one of them, the bond will be enduring.

these people. For example, when someone in the family dies, religious officials are called upon to perform the rituals. The dead man's body is washed to prepare it for the ceremony. The sacred text of the Koran is read over the body. It is believed that the chants from the Koran will lighten the dead man's spirit from its physical pain.

RELATION Maryam and Pulong are of 2 different ethnicities and it is probably one of the reasons why Maryam’s family are against their relationship because they probably have everything planned out for Maryam.

Since Maryam is at the marriageable age, the security and protection given to her at that time was high. Especially when she’s in a relationship that is not favoured by her family and a man of different culture as well.

When Maryam’s brother discovered that she had eloped, everyone in the village joined him in the search. This proves just how strong the bond is among fellow Tausug. One of the reasons as to why Maryam rebelled and went against her family is probably because of this. She might've got suffocated with all the strict rules. All she wanted was to love freely but because of this tying her down, she eventually got tired of it and decided to let everything go.

At the end of the story, Maryam and Pulong jumped off a cliff and died. Their corpses were probably not retrieved and so the burial practices weren’t made so as to why it is said that their cries could still be heard up until today....
