Description

1.) Before conducting research on graphic novels, I knew little about them. As a child I read a few, but as I got older my interests were piqued by things with more substance. Although I find graphic novels to be interesting and fun to read they only provide short term gratification. I also know that graphic novels are not entirely like a comic book, but the differences are not that different. 2.) A graphic novel can be defined as a book-length comic, hence the name. Graphic meaning it contains pictures and novel meaning it tells a story of some sort. Sometimes graphic novels tell a single, continuous narrative from the start to finish. One reason for graphic novel increase in the 1990s was people coming to the realization that comics were not only for children. Graphic novels are generally fictional stories told in comic format, and since older audiences too like fiction, their popularity increased. Also, artist began to publish more graphic novels because they allowed them to express emotions more freely. In a traditional comic the format was specific, whereas in graphic novels the format is varies with the artist. I addition to the stated factors of graphic novel increase, women are another cause. When comics were first emerging, the main audience was young men, but due to the storyline and format of a graphic novel women are partaking as well. 4.) Some examples of graphic novels published within the last ten years include: Nimona, this one summer, and through the woods. These graphic novels all have comic like characteristics, but they also have a story line. Like previously stated, graphic novels are novels with pictures. illustration throughout the novel, I do appreciate a good read. If the graphic novel maintains a steady balance between being an actual novel and a comic book then I will have no trouble finding interest in it. I tend to live by the motto ‘don’t knock it till’ you rock it’ , and I surely apply it to the type of material I read....
