Banning/Removing the Confederate Flag

What group(s) in American society does the perspective appeal to? People concerned that the flag represents racism, hate, violence, division, and white supremacy.

Keeping the Confederate Flag

Supporters of the Confederate flag see the flag as a piece of history and southern pride. Many also feel that the Confederate flag represents their heritage.

What are the biases in the perspective?

Biases of this perspective would include the assumption that the Confederate flag represents and promotes division, racism, hate, and violence.

Removing the confederate flag is most appealing to me because of the symbol of hate that it represents. While I agree that the history behind the flag is important, I do not feel the flag should be venerated.

Biases of this perspective include the assumption that the Confederate flag represents heritage, southern pride, and American history.

This perspective does not appeal to me. I can recognize the historical significance of the Confederate flag; however, I do not feel it that it needs to be on public display. Having the flag displayed in a museum would maintain its history.

What objective evidence is used to support the perspective? Demonstrations such as the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally, in Charlottesville, VA, where white supremacist and neoNazis took to the street chanting racist and antiSemitic slurs while carrying Confederate flags are an example of the hate rooted behind the flag itself. Supporters of the Confederate flag have long advocated that removing the flag will not heal the racial division in America, but only remove the history and heritage that the flag represents....
