This week we focused on the topic of gender and the different roles each sex has in the society in which we live in. Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche touched on the difference between how women and men are treated in her hometown, Nigeria. Then we also went about discussing gender further by differentiating between the Super Nintendo characters, Mario and Luigi and Princess Peach and also touched on the subject of different sexualties. Adiche used anecdotes throughout her speech to demonstrate the injustice between men and women. Women are seen to be dependent on men; Adiche further substantiates this claim by illustrating an experience where she handed a man money for his services and the man thanked her friend Lois, who was male. Women are often seen as weak individuals who do not have a source of income. However, times are changing; we see women climbing the social ladder. Adiche also does a phenomenal job in describing the roots of this injustice. She demonstrates that parents teach girls to enforce their man’s ego and let them be masculine. As a Bengali girl raised in the United States, I can relate to Adiche’s claim; many people in my society have told me to not become a doctor because it would be more difficult to get married in that my husband would have to be the breadwinner and with such an occupation I would be narrowing down my options. To this very day, it has always disturbed me because I am uncomfortable with depending on another person’s stability. Furthermore, in the class video, Professor Pfaff differentiated between the men and woman in the Super Nintendo games. We definitely see the difference in appearance but also roles. Princess Peach sits around in a locked area while she waits helplessly as the the males, Mario and Luigi, fight to get her. This also demonstrates the different gender roles seen in society in that the man does all the work and woman stays in one place depending on her man to save her. As this is an example of how children learn their roles in society, we also see this in advertisement, sports and television. In popular sports, males definitely dominate (no one really watches the female teams) and we see the women on the side lines cheering the men on. This line between men and women are created through culture and are still illustrated within our daily lives. Another topic we touched on was the different sexualities. As a country we are definitely opening up to accepting gay people and their rights. After gay marriage had been legalized in many states, we see more people coming out of the closet and expressing their sexualities, which I believe is extremely important. All people deserve the right to be happy in my opinion and no one else has a right to be in the way. With that said I did not know there were so many different types of sexualities. All in all, America has come a long way with gender and sexuality; from giving women rights and giving gay people the right to get married.

I believe Bill should not be a pastor because it affects his ability to do his job effectively as it would lessen the amount of people that follow him. If one’s private sphere threatens the

effectiveness at work then it should be taken care of. It’s the employer’s responsibility to take care of his/her employees and the basis of any institution is to be most effective with its resources. Bill’s involvement in Ashley Madison directly affects his ability to be an effective leader in a religious community in that he does not practice what he preaches. In contrast if a politician were to have an affair it would be less detrimental to his/her job in that it would not make a tremendous difference in polls. Ethical principles change from scenario to scenario; personal information affects our efficiency in a workplace. However, I do not believe that information that does not affect work is relevant; for example, people should be able to keep their emails and messages private in that there is too much company involvement in their personal sphere. There has to be a healthy balance between both public and private life....
