In this documentary film, the downside of the US health care system is given in a clear picture. The video uses a lot of statistic and number to show how much money the US spends each year for healthcare. It roughly $4.2 trillion a year, and it is the highest compared with other developed countries in the world. The US also spends $300 billion for pharmaceutical drugs and it is almost the rest of the world combined. Despite the very big money spend on health care, the outcomes are worse. People still lack care, and it becomese a disease care system, not the health care system. Health care provider gets paid on the number of patients they are treated, not the amount of time they spend to care for their patient. It becomes profit-driven care, not patientdriven care. Physicians also give patients many tests and procedures that they might not need to. There is a lot of money spent on unnecessary tests, and it wastes a huge amount of money, but health is not improved. It also makes medical bills rise so high. Medical error and hospital-acquired infection are the third cause of death in the US just below heart disease and cancer. Patients seem to be never healed, they come back to the hospital repeatedly. Insurance companies are unable to regulate their cost, they keep increasing the rate as much as they want. America has a very high rate of obesity and heart disease and even the food industry contributes a bit to this problem. Fast food and sugar food always cost less than vegetable or meat. The solution for those problems is encouraging self-change by exercise, and

healthy eating habit. Physicians provide care with high-touch and low-cost methods such as meditation or acupuncture. At Safeway, there are some discounts for premium health insurance for people with good body mass index, non-smoker, low cholestenone level, heart pressure under control, … This would help people form good behavior which reduces the risk of any disease. Also, people are trying to create a healthcare system that provides much more care for patients. This documentary film is all about expressing problems in the US healthcare system and finding ways to solve them. The statistic and number using in the film are accurately reflected how much money we spend in healthcare ($4.2 trillion annually) and the pharmaceutical industry ($300 billion). The number of obese people is 65% on average, which is high compared with all countries in the rest of the world. It reflects the system in which the medical costs are high, but the outcome is worse. But, not all component of the US health care system was expressed in this film such as people cannot easily accessible to the system. The health system is unequal access. Many people must wait until the disease gets worse and then get into the emergency room. Some people hesitate to buy health insurance because they think they don’t need to. Insurance component wasn’t being explained clearly. This film isn’t providing a balanced assessment of the system. It only expresses the negative side. This documentary also doesn’t have an effective solution to solve the problem of physician provides unnecessary test or procedure. They forgot to tell us about how this problem is being prevented. Giving patients more care doesn’t solve the medical error or reduce unnecessary procedure. There are many sicknesses cannot just prevent by exercise. Exercise and healthy eating habit reduce the risk of disease, but not cure it. Exercise plays a big change, but we still need more change in our health care system. Especially, getting insurance for our family, getting enough care, and the outcomes of our health after receive treatment are the most

important thing we need to change. Even people who always have good habits, nothing makes sure they will never get sick, and when they get sick, they need to access to care, they need a good treatment to solve their problem, and they need the health care providers to make sure they are safe in the hospital. Furthermore, if people are low income, or have children, they need to get help on paying for the medical cost. There must be something that helps people such as the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, Medicare, or CHIP, … to pay for their insurance or medical bills. The high costs of the system still don’t have any solution for it. The film did not tell us how to prevent medical error and hospital-acquired infection which contributes to the main causes of death in the US. People should pay more attention to reduce medical error or any risk of infection because the healthcare system supposes to make people feel better, not to kill them. Also, the high cost for vegetable and low cost for fast food, and sugary foods are everywhere encouraging people to eat more sugar each day. This is a problem we should consider because our country has a very high rate of diabetes. Even a plain yogurt or skim milk has a lot of sugar on it already. The solutions for those problems need more than just exercise and care more about patients. The changes have many things to deal with such as government, society, individual. In the video, it said that exercise can reverse the heart disease, which is true in some case, but not in a lot of other cases. When it’s time to do surgery, patients need to access to the hospital and pay for the services. Exercise is good, but it, not a substituent for medication and for treatment. Exercise can boost our immune system, but it cannot kill an infection. The bigger problem we must change is the way the system is operating. The range of solutions for those issues in the film is small. There is not enough way to solve all the problems that were identified. The most challenges in the US health care system are high cost, lack of access, and quality concern. So, one of the things that can make more

American get insurance is the Affordable Care Act. ACA helps individual or families who have income 100%-400% of the federal property level to buy insurance through the premium tax credit, and that helps lower the cost. It also expands Medicaid to 133% federal property level. For the high-cost problem, healthcare providers should be more careful about giving patients procedure that they need instead of giving a lot of procedures, but the health quality doesn’t improve. And, the physician should spend more time determining the way to solve the health problem, not just to make patients come back repeatedly. Also, preventative care should be expanding to every health facilities. More health counselor available for patients. For lack access, the world is in the high technology era right now, so people could use online visit or phone call visit in our clinics nowadays. For regular sickness, it usually takes a long time to schedule an appointment, and sometimes our sickness has gone away by the time of the appointment. So, online visit or phone call visit would help patients save a lot of time and still get what they need to know. It also reduces the copay fee they must pay every office visit. Using the internet to communicate between doctor and patients also a great idea because doctors can give more care for their patients and it is easier to keep track of their health. Those communications would make people pay less than when they come to the office to talk with the doctors....
