Handwashing Lab report...

Description

Handwashing Lab Report (Lab Manual pgs. 24 – 25) Daniel Thacher I.

Purpose a. Describe the purpose of this experiment (Minimum of three sentences)

The purpose of this laboratory is to see and know the types of bacteria and microbes that we accumulate in our hands before and after washing our hands. This experiment will help us to know, the importance of washing our hands and the necessary measures to take, as health professionals. II.

Results Record your results in the figure below (you may upload a photo). Describe at least two different colonies (color, elevation, margin and edge)

In the before R finger) we can see 6 different sizes of colonies with a cocci shape and different types of colors like yellow, beige and white. COL 1

In the before L finger) we can see a big white smooth opaque flat colony with a line in the middle spread all over. COL 2

In the after-R finger) we can see a small amount of colony, with a circular/cocci shape, some of this colony are yellow, white, gray and some are colorless. We can see a white-opaque big circular with a spreading edge colony, with some different shapes of colonies in the center. COL 3

In the after-L fingers) we can see single different circular colonies with different sizes with various types of colors like white, yellows and beige.

III.

Conclusions: Answer the following questions a. Is there a difference in the amount of bacterial growth on your plate before and after handwashing? Yes, in the Before, we can see a large number of accumulated bacteria, however; in the After, although we can see a smaller number of bacteria, there still present in smaller quantities. This is due to the fact that, human skin, is inhabit by a diverse group of microorganisms; Some of these microorganisms are part of the normal microbiota of our skin, examples (diphroids, staphylococci, yeasts and fungi).

b. Go to this website: http://www.cdc.gov/features/handwashing/

According to the CDC, the proper way for handwashing is, to wet your hands, with running warm or cold water and soap, lathering your hands all the way up and down, including in between your fingers for at least 20 minutes; and if, there is not water or soap, its recommended to use hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol. c) If you follow this procedure do you think that all microbes be removed from your hands? Why or why not?

When we follow these instructions, we are going to greatly reduce the number of bacteria, including those pathogens that can make us sick. Something important that we must remember, is that, microbes are ubiquitous, and they are present everywhere, such as water we drink, the air we breathe, our body, etc. It is impossible to get rid of all microbes 100%.
