When I first read the Harry Potter books, one of the first concepts that led me to love the series was the educational system of Hogwarts. The idea that by placing a hat on your head, it would determine the house that you would represent and call home was so interesting to me. I think I would enjoy being in a system similar to Hogwarts. It would create a sense of structure and order that is important in any school system. In addition, the unity and close relationships that would undoubtedly form in each house would help the students have a much better school experience. Creating four houses within Hogwarts helps ease the students into the daunting idea of joining a huge, new school. However, there are a few reasons this system could be flawed. First, there is the problem that students could be placed in a house they do not resonate with, or do not want to be in. Not getting the choice could create issues within the school system. If students arrive at Hogwarts with a specific house in mind, they could be severely disappointed. Another disadvantage is the difficulty to intermingle among the houses. Because of the points system, and the House Cup that is awarded, there is a constant rivalry against any house you are not in. This segregation could prevent friendships and opportunities from arising, as well as bullying or mistreatment for being in a particular house. Overall, I think the housing system is extremely effective and wise. I would have enjoyed studying under a structure similar to Hogwarts, because I appreciate the organization and routine that is involved....
