Harvard Business School Liz Hutchinson Session 10 June 2020 HBS pioneered the case method, where a business problem case is to be solved. 93 students from all over the world are brought in each case team, and each person brings their own special experiences. Students are sent to 13 locations all over the world, to solve real business problem. Coming back from this 60% people change their job.



50% of alumni make a company. o Entrepreneurs in residence o Rockefeller entrepreneurial society. o Entrepreneurial manager – compulsory first year course. o Entrepreneurs in residence

2 + 2: Working for two years, taking a break from 2-4 years, then back at it for two years. 100 students each year. o For exploratory risk taking, trying your company, if you mess up, back to HBS! o Eligibility: Final year of undergrad study.



Teaching style per Tim: empathise with business leaders directly, help you contextualise business theories in everyday life. Critical business decisions can’t be made without ambiguity, so this case method does a great job simulating real business life. Tim- Restructure is the grading system at HBS (Grade 1 -highest- to 3). The case method depends on active contribution; grade non-disclosure allows you to take risk by asking tough questions, without being scared on what effect it would have on your marks.  80% of the class gets a 2. 

In the case method, the professor often calls upon someone to start off the conversation, called a ‘cold call’. Tim recollects his first cold call,



Kate’s first cold call was the Erics Peterson case. Particularly memorable cases that people across decades can identify with: o Cranberry case in operations case: very early in the semester!
