Chapter 2 of Human Behavior and Organization...

Description

CHAPTER 2: Diversity in Organizations ACTIVITIES/ EXERCISES 1. Self-analysis. What is your position on diversity in the workplace? How would you describe your attitude towards diversity? Be detailed in your analysis. I personally believe that I am someone who can bring out the best in people, and someone who encourages other people whenever they feel down. For almost eight years, I was always chosen to lead a group, and different organizations. Within those years, I always make sure to challenge both of my group mates and org-mates. I am aware that every person has different capabilities; if am capable of doing a specific task, maybe others cannot do it. So before allocating the task, I look and analyse their capabilities and skills. So whenever they think that they cannot perform the task they were assigned, I make sure to give them the assurance they need in order to make them believe in their selves. Sometimes, I assign task depending on the things they have not done yet to see if there are still things that they can do but they are not yet aware. Of course, not all the time, group projects are successful. Whenever my group mates feel down because of that, as a leader, I make sure to encourage them as much as I can and promise them that we will definitely do better next time. 2. Web Crawling. Find and present an online article on diversity in a country other than the United States. What commonalities are exposed and what differences are shown to exist?

It is said that Philippines is a very diverse country. After all, we were colonized by many countries affecting the culture and thinking that we have. The article features both gender and age gap and diversity in a workplace. In 2019, Philippines ranked 8 th in the World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report; however, after a year, we were ranked 16th- a big slip from last year’s spot. Despite having a gender- diverse workplace, we still need step up and have more women as leaders. We need to believe and trust that women can also do the things that men can do, and go beyond that. This is something that companies should invest because of its long-term benefits- they need to create more gender-friendly policies and projects. In terms of age, Philippines has a very age-diverse workplace. Almost all companies here accept both young and old employees- but still depends on how heavy the works are. Being diverse in age isn’t

the problem in a workplace, the inclusion is. Despite having a homogenous place, many people still have this stigma that if you are young, you are not as capable as old people, and if you are old, you can no longer do things what young people can do. With this, people will lose the opportunity to learn from the different experiences and backgrounds of others which affect healthy and productive discussions. ASSESSMENT: Fill in the blanks 1.
